Tonight’s operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was carried out by the U.S. Army’s 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment–Delta (1st SFOD-D), known more commonly as Delta Force, according to CBS News.

Today's military action was not an attack on Venezuela, its people, or its sovereignty. Rather, it was a response to a regime that attacks the United States and its people. Venezuela lost its sovereignty long ago to a regime that rigged elections, persecuted opponents, and transformed a once-prosperous nation into the most extensive economic and humanitarian tragedy in the Western Hemisphere. Maduro has been arrested. While the regime is not coming to an end, this development creates an opportunity for change.

O professor Mauro Sposito morreu hoje. Muitos o tratavam como delegado, pois essa foi a sua profissão. Mas na realidade, o doutor Mauro era um professor. Ele formou gerações de policiais federais que passaram pela Amazônia. Mas não só eles. Qualquer jornalista que, nas últimas quatro décadas, precisou tratar dos temas mais espinhosos daquela região não tinha como fazer bem o trabalho sem antes ter que ouví-lo. Ninguém, absolutamente ninguém, sabia mais sobre as fronteiras brasileiras do que o doutor Mauro. Era uma paixão acompanhada de ações e operações. A primeira vez que o vi foi em abril de 2004, bem no calor das investigações do caso dos garimpeiros chacinados pelos índios Cinta-Larga em Rondônia. O doutor Mauro era um policial tão fora da curva que as suas explicações sobre o contexto daqueles assassinatos moldou a minha percepção sobre o crime transnacional e a convergência com o terror. Os nomes que emergiram daquela trama de contrabando de diamantes se entrelaçavam com o tráfico de cocaína e organizações terroristas. Era algo tão novo que não fui capaz de entender como tudo isso poderia se conectar assim. Foram anos de idas e vindas. Encontros em Tabatinga e sua base Anzol, Manaus, Rio Branco, Brasileia, São Gabriel da Cachoeira e tantas outras bordas amazônicas. A última vez que o vi foi em 2018. Em uma visita de cortesia, em uma passagem que fiz por Manaus. Tomamos guaraná Real no quintal de sua casa e falamos de como ia a sua vida de aposentado e sobre os seus planos de fazer um livro de memórias. Exatamente naquele dia, o meu livro Hugo Chávez, o espectro estava chegando nas livrarias. Eu não tinha um exemplar em mãos para entregá-lo, mas depois enviei um pelo correio. Na dedicatória, eu disse ao meu professor obrigado. Sem as lições de campo que ele me deu, eu não teria aberto os olhos para buscar compreender como o crime organizado sempre esteve penetrado na Amazônia, estando por trás da maioria dos crimes ambientais, por exemplo. Eu tão teria ido adiante no esforço de aprender melhor como essas redes de interligam desde um coletor de folhas de coca, passando pela pesca ilegal ou desmatamento, chegando em um homem bomba em Israel. Parece delírio. Também levei tempo para entender e aprender a juntar as pontas de um problema que o professor Mauro Sposito tinha tão claro em sua mente e em seus ensinamentos. Esse era o doutor Mauro Sposito.
