We went to look at Christmas lights last night and my son helped remind us all about the true meaning of Christmas. He was thrilled every time we saw a JOY yard sign. He kept saying he wanted more "J-O-Y" and that he was going to keep his eyes open to look for it.
Dear LORD:
“We pray you to impress upon us a deep sense of the importance of eternity.
May we be looking continually to the end of our course;
and remembering how soon all in which we here delight shall have passed forever….”
Henry Thornton
Does a Christian need to care about the environment? Absolutely! Does a Christian need to care about the widow and the orphan? Absolutely! - We are called to love in the same way that Jesus himself loved.
I recently purchased some rose seeds to try to grow roses from seed. Every rose from seed is genetically unique. Just like you. You are uniquely made by God for his purposes.
The more I look at the world around me, the more I see that the world is broken and that we need to heal it, to fix it, to restore it. There are many things we can do from regenerative agriculture, to large scale trash cleanups and forest re-plantings.
There is a huge call to create that is inherent in each one of us. We live in a consumeristic society and often consume far more than we produce. This leads us to feel as though we have made no progress at the end of the day and often leaves us feeling stuck
It might be close to what someone else has, but it is still unique to you. You then have the responsibility of growing this over time to develop something that can then be released to the public. This might be a song or a book or a business, but they all take time to grow.
When looking at the world of rose breeding, it is a time sensitive project at the beginning, then it becomes a waiting game. Each seed that comes from a rose is genetically unique and then has to take the time to germinate, grow, and finally be selected.
All of this has to happen before the rose variety can become commercially available and this process can take several years. The same is true for those who want to write books or do anything creative. Often you will get the seed of an idea that is unique to you.
In my first book, there is Dragon Jousting which is like normal jousting but with dragons and flying through the air. There are points if you can dislodge you opponent, but also points if your own dragon can't catch you before the other dragons do.
Recently there have been a range of articles and videos that have discussed the Call to Create. I have my own opinions on this that I have put together into an article on my substack which will be coming out on Friday.
When did we lose the ability to think back over our lives, to reflect, to contemplate, to grow. Perhaps it was when we decided we needed to fill every minute of our lives with some activity where we are always rushing between events just to say that we completed them.
Somedays you can't manage to find the time to get any writing done, and other days you have the time and no desire to do anything with it. I had the time today and sat down to write, and I couldn't even keep my eyes open. Ugh.
The church I have attended for nearly a year started a morning prayer time for men to get together and pray over the word, each other, and others. We had close to 15 people this morning show up for the first session and it was amazing to see how God is working in our community.
Read good books. Borrow good books. Buy good books. Lend good books. Give good books. Request good books. Write good books. Discuss good books. Debate good books. Reread good books. Love good books.
@elchandler I wrote a portion of a chapter like that the other day. It started with people being mad at each other, and then progressed through everyone happily playing with one another and splashing in the river.
Whenever I see kids “addicted to screens,” it’s almost always because the rest of their life offers less: less agency, less challenge, less stimulation, less meaning. The only thing that beats screens is purpose.
I just finished my writings for next week's post regarding the call to create. If you feel the call to create something, go ahead and subscribe so you don't miss the post.
