UPDATE
People within the Mets front office still hold the belief that Brett Baty will emerge as a lineup staple, which means they will not part with him for nothing, per @chelsea_janes
Mark Vientos is having a tough game at first base. In addition to being unable to corral a Nolan McLean pickoff throw in the first inning, resulting in an unearned run, Vientos was eaten up by this ball in the fifth.
Run prevention
This doesn’t include Baty whiffing on a relatively easy ball at the wall
Vientos acted like Semien threw that in the top deck … was that not doable ?
Ship Baty and Vientos to Japan for a week’s supply of A5 Wagyu steaks
@CaptainCons I had to text buddies confirming I wasn’t insane because it was so incomprehensibly awful. Script, acting, sequencing, everything completely fell apart
Luke Weaver offers up his perspective on the Mets' struggles:
"I've been sitting here trying to think about what to even say to you guys and what you're even going to ask. At the end of the day, this pursuit of perfection is an ultimate pressurized failure mindset.
Everybody wants to be the hero because we care and we want to win really, really bad. I just don't think success lives in that realm. It truly doesn't.
The freedom with which we play day-to-day is kind of being suffocated a little bit.
I want to do my job, it's that simple - there's moments that feel really close, and then there's mistakes that magnify our situation.
I sit there and feel the weight of the world, like I let the team down...
We sit there and we tell you guys, 'It'll come. This is the game. This is the law of averages.' But those words just don't hold the same weight when you continue to [lose] day after day.
The encouragement and motivation to pursue being the best person and best baseball player you can be is the only answer.
Until we prove that, I understand the grievances from the outsiders."
"When they got booed off the field after being swept by the A's, I think a lot of guys were stunned at how vociferous the fan base can be."
Among the new group of players the Mets brought in, @JimDuquetteGM still has questions about who can and can't handle New York.
