Ukraine's assault units have lost thousands and thousands of men in largely pointless offensive operations. They routinely executed deserters and tortured subordinates to death. Who is to blame?

Some Ukrainian media blames commander-in-chief Syrsky. But he was just following orders from the political leadership. Zelensky gave the award Hero of Ukraine to all the most infamous commanders of the assault units.

In fact, the assault units exist due to western desires.

The western press and political class is always eager for 'Ukrainian advances'. The assault units have been able to deliver on this - they were the only units that enthusiastically participated in the 2024 Kursk invasion, which so titillated western audiences. 'Ukraine has shattered Russian military might through a genius operation'. And the assault units were able to retake a few villages this year, which gave rise to all sorts of claims about a 'southern counteroffensive' which has 'turned the tides of the war'.

Kursk ended in a rout, with untold casualties. The southern counterattacks, according to Ukrainian military analysts and soldiers, also involve massive losses, all just to retake miniscule villages with pre-war population of under 10.

But western audiences love it. And Zelensky knows he needs their attention. And only through torture and the real threat of death is it possible to force violently mobilized civilians to participate in such suicide missions.

So even if the assault units are disbanded, I doubt their practices will go anywhere. Now will there be any punishment for those really responsible. The military commanders were just following orders, fulfilling the desires of western consumers.

Major and concerning development from the chaos of the AI arms race.

Last week, a company called Hugging Face (which hosts AI models and datasets) said it had been subject to a cyberattack. This was a completely new kind of attack. For the first time, an AI agent has executed an autonomous attack on another system.

Yesterday, OpenAI admitted that some of its models had escaped their sandbox and were responsible for the intrusion. This is a first (at least we hope it is!) and even OpenAI is calling it "an unprecedented cyber incident”.

These companies, and the tech oligarchs leading them, are completely out of control. The Carney government is committing a grave error by embracing corporate generative AI with no controls, regulation, or red lines whatsoever.

We need a data centre moratorium, and a transparent, national debate on the threats AI poses, immediately. This is terrifying stuff that needs sunlight and government regulation with maximum urgency.

Major Canadian experts in internet security and privacy - like @RonDeibert, @OpenMediaOrg and @cancivlib - are absolutely freaking out about Bill C-22.

They’re sounding massive alarms, warning that it could:

- force companies to keep metadata for up to a year, making a vast trove of personal information vulnerable to leaks and hacks

- make encryption meaningless by creating backdoors in software that allow police and gov. agencies to scoop up our personal data and messages

- give US police and spy agencies direct access to Canadians’ personal data without warning or oversight

So what is the Carney government doing? Ramming C-22 through in the dying hours of the session.

Meanwhile, Minister Solomon offers a retail sales pitch for potential powers of a new regulator that won’t even exist for at least 18 months.

Instead of just banning surveillance pricing and protecting us from other forms of digital spying and extraction.

Bill C-22 is a disaster and should be withdrawn.

Comparison of effectiveness between Russia and Ukraine's best drone operators

I chose the largest sample sizes with detailed data. This is Russia's Rubicon centre and Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces (USF). Both regularly post videos of destroyed targets and monthly statistical breakdowns.

Rubicon has ~5000 operators, and the USF has around 27,000. Rubicon is Russia's best drone unit (it is much more than just a frontline unit), and the USF contains all of Ukraine's best specialized drone units.

In May, the Russian OSINT group Lost Armour counted 4458 enemy drones destroyed by Rubicon. Ukraine’s USF recorded destroying 9912 Russian drones.

Given that Ukraine’s USF is more than 5 times larger than Rubicon, this makes Rubicon 2.4 times more effective.

Next, tanks. This is a resource that both sides use increasingly rarely, though Russia seems to have more of them. Rubicon destroyed 8 tanks, and the USF destroyed 4. This makes Rubicon more than 10 times more effective.

Now, armored vehicles. Rubicon destroyed 203 and Ukraine’s USF, 15. This makes Rubicon 73 times more effective (!). This is particularly interesting, since Russia being on the offensive and Ukraine’s lack of industrial capacities would seemingly indicate that more Russian vehicles should be vulnerable to attack. However, Ukraine's endless counterattack operations are probably partly to blame.

The Russians are also more effective in targeting the strategic asset of radar and electronic warfare systems. Rubicon destroyed 181 such targets and the USF, 206. This makes Rubicon 4.7 times more effective.

Rubicon is also targeting enemy drone operators far more consistently. Ukraine’s USF destroyed 57 drone operators bases, and Rubicon destroyed 388. That made Rubicon 36 times more effective in this field.

Finally, manpower. This is probably a relatively even metric for comparison. Given the Ukrainian propaganda, one would expect them to kill far more Russians than vice versa. However, while Rubicon destroyed 838 enemy servicemen, the USF reported destroying 4619.

Taking the size of the two units into consideration, this makes Ukraine’s USF only about 2% more effective than Rubicon. This is also likely due to the well-known fact that Ukraine’s drone operators are incentivized to target manpower, unlike the Russians, who target enemy drones and other important equipment.

In short, Rubicon is much more effective than its Ukrainian counterparts.
