NSW Police Assigned Running Bodyguards to IDF Soldiers at Sydney Marathon

A new Michael West Media investigation has raised questions over NSW Police resources used to protect Israeli military personnel during the Sydney Marathon. The report, citing a senior NSW Police officer, claims six runners identified as serving IDF members were accompanied throughout the race by groups of police officers posing as fellow competitors. With four to six officers reportedly assigned to each runner, the operation may have involved around 30 officers.

The revelations are particularly contentious because the Israeli delegation arrived amid calls for greater scrutiny of military personnel who have served in Gaza. Australian UN investigator Chris Sidoti has previously argued that Israeli personnel who served there should face questioning over possible international crimes. For Australians already questioning why current and former IDF personnel were permitted to enter the country for the event, the latest report adds another issue: why NSW taxpayers may have funded a specialised police escort for members of a foreign military, who approved it, and whether the public will be told the true cost.
