🇪🇺President @VonDerLeyen looks right at @PM_ViktorOrban as she discusses Ukraine. And she has uncharacteristically tough words.
"The world has witnessed the atrocities of Russia's war. And yet, there are still some who blame this war not on the invader, but the invaded. Not on Putin's lust for power, but on Ukraine's thirst for freedom. So I want to ask them [Orban], would they ever blame the Hungarians for the Soviet invasion of 1956?"
"We Europeans may have different histories and different languages. But there is no European language in which peace is synonymous with surrender and sovereignty is synonymous with occupation. The people of Ukraine are freedom fighters, just like the heroes that freed central and Eastern Europe from Soviet rule."
"And there's only one path to achieve a *just* peace for Ukraine and for Europe. We must continue to empower Ukraine's resistance with political, financial and military support."
I had not realized coal power has plummeted like this in Germany - down two thirds in a decade. See the two jumps from ~2009 to 2013 and 2020 to 2022? That's the only times that developments on coal in Germany were widely reported on... the coal industry hype machine is doing a lot better than the rest of the industry. And to be clear this includes both hard coal and lignite; my first reaction when seeing this was it cannot include both.

That’d make the Biden-Xi meeting exactly 10 years after the Obama-Xi meeting at the APEC in Beijing, where the two sides delivered their first joint climate statement. What a decade it has been.
Breaking: China’s CO2 emissions fell 1% in Q2 of 2024, the first quarterly fall since the end of zero-Covid, following five straight quarters of increases. Full-year emissions are on track to fall this year, but only if electricity demand growth eases as expected.

I got the chance to go on National Public Radio to explain why striking Russian oil refineries hurts Russia economically, is good military strategy and does not raise prices at the pump. Washington's chronic and misguided fear of affecting oil prices has hampered effective sanctions and must be re-evaluated based on facts.
As one Chinese diplomat puts it, sardonically, America’s proposition to Beijing could be summarised as: “Please help us to defeat your closest ally, so that we can turn on you next.” @gideonrachman in @FT. https://t.co/Ityp8AvfbC
What does a cabinet reshuffle in Russia mean for 🇨🇳🇷🇺 government-to-government ties? It's about continuity, deepening, and long-term. Also, as Beijing and Moscow expand their defense industrial cooperation, Putin has elevated high-caliber professionals with China experience. 🧵
Charts of the Day: Lithium-ion batteries are likely to be most affected by a new round of U.S. tariff hikes designed to prevent the American market from being flooded with cheap Chinese goods. https://t.co/iC1nHHBKwo
The highly scripted official part of Putin’s state visit to China has started. But it will be his 1-on-1 with Xi and intimate dinner with natsec teams tonight (Belousov, Shoigu, Lavrov, Ushakov) where the real action is.
The Great Foreign Car Brand Collapse in China.
"Last week, BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu predicted foreign brands would see their China market share plummet from 40% to 10% in the next three to five years."
A drop from 40% to 10% would be massive.

NEW from me: China's 2024 energy and economic targets allow CO2 emissions to rise up to 2.4%, because a major redefinition of a key energy target. The target could well be overachieved, but the low target is not helping China's credibility.

Nuclear did not play a role in the #Raisina2024 energy panel discussion. Question from audience: What about nuclear? India's G20 sherpa responds shortly: Small nuclear will be needed. But he more emphasizes: Markets must penalize those that account for GHG emissions.
