@MomAngtrades As a woman, it says a lot about what you feel about your own gender when you assume petty possessiveness over maternal protectiveness right off the bat.
Not unethical, just childish and unprofessional. These therapists are in dire need of training, supervision, and therapy of their own.
Of all people, therapists should be able to tolerate differing values without succumbing to the fundamental attribution error.
In referencing mood benefits of physical activity alone: "These effects are comparable to, and in some cases greater than, current front-line pharmacological and cognitive-behavioural treatments (Singh et al., 2023)"
Just a reminder that exercise and mindfulness interventions are integral for mental health. With so many unpredictable side effects of medication, this needs to be emphasized more. https://t.co/HZC4s7lILu
@taylorburrowes Omg, I am recalling the looks I got in grad school when I tried to make this point in 2016. It is both sad and fascinating how effective the shame, gas lighting, and overall manipulation has been in causing division and using the people to silence one another.
@stclairashley@CindyColbert Yes! This is what we commonly refer to as "pregnancy brain," But we are not actually getting dumber! The changes in white matter are actually thousands of new neural connections that actually fine-tune our abilities to be mothers. I love the appreciation this post is getting.
We can process and validate fears without resorting to villainizing or encouraging thought distortions. I'm sure you can recognize more than a few that we have been vulnerable to over the course of this election. Stay connected. Stay curious. Stay diligent.
I have been seeing so many families torn apart by this recent election. Going no contact is a personal choice that should be based on a sense of personal safety, not decided by rhetoric of those in power.
I am hoping my fellow therapists will join me in avoiding partisanship, instead empowering our clients to advocate for their values while engaging in open and curious dialogue. Further disconnection will only exacerbate our current mental health crisis.
Everyone has the need for safety, connection, autonomy, a sense of competence, and fun. When these needs are not adequately met (especially during childhood), it can cause significant impairment in relationships and parenting. Your needs matter.
A little self-disclosure: it is such an ongoing internal conflict in trying to balance professional development and modeling appropriate screentime for mental health for myself and kids. Just... How?
Remember, your body and mind are deeply interconnected. Regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and quality sleep aren't just for physical wellness, they're crucial for your mental health too. Listen to your body, honor its needs, and you'll be supporting your mind as well. 🏋️♂️🥦💤
