i swear to god everyone stop pushing AI on me i literally hate generative AI with every fiber of my being what a deeply unintellectual waste of energy and resources
I'm afraid that this is why the US administration wants to shut down ocean observations: they don't want the people to know what is happening in our oceans, as it does not fit their ideology and the interests of their fossil fuel industry funders.

Sick of hearing this. People have been making art and writing without machine assistance for thousands of years, and it’s profoundly degrading to suggest that students are now incapable of doing so. If these men have their way, it will be the death of thinking and the arts.
Economics has never been, and never will be, a value-free science.
At its core, economics is shaped by ideologies, value judgements, competing interests, social norms, and political priorities.
Adam Smith and Karl Marx — two of the most important figures in the history of economics — both treated it as an inherently political subject. They didn't even call it "economics." They called it political economy.
For Smith, the study of wealth creation was inseparable from questions about the state, social class, and moral philosophy. For Marx, the economy was a system of power relations.
Yet most introductory economics textbooks relegate politics, power, and history to footnotes. Technical models fill the space instead, abstractions that describe an imaginary economy more than the real one.
My newsletter's most popular piece is on how economics became a discipline detached from politics — despite the fact that it is intrinsically and unavoidably political.

#JillianSegal 's goal is to transform Australian school kids into pro-Israel, genocidal, Muslim-hating drones. This is what happens to Israeli school-kids. They are raised to be mentally derranged, remorseless murderers and bigots.
This Woman needs to be removed from her position and placed on a Watch List. Her insidious activities must stop.
Every Professor and Teacher in Australia must do everything they can to thwart and resist the directives of this disgusting, insidious, treacherous, genocidal Zionist, who is on record as encouraging the bombing of hospitals full of innocent Civilians and Doctors.
Her goal is to push and formalise the IHRA definition of anti-semitism, to stop any criticism of #Israel 's murderous and lawless activities.
It's your duty as an Australian, to resist her insidious activities. Anything less is an act of betrayal of #Australia.
"as an undergrad you don't know what you don't know" -- exactly & therefore won't know when AI gives bogus info.
more importantly though, you don't write papers in undergrad to produce a good paper. you write papers to learn how to read & research & think.
The narrative being sold by the chatbot industrial complex is science fiction. They cannot build what they need to build. And if they do build it, it won’t work.
This guy does a good job breaking down the impossible physics of this scam.

Israel murdered Australian Humanitarian aid worker Zomi Frankcom in cold blood - no action from our government.
Israeli soldiers sexually assaulted and abused Australian activists on board a flotilla - no action from our government.
israelis have been comitting genocide for the last 3 years, slaughtering 10's of 1000's of children in the process - no action from our government.
Someone please tell me: WTF is going on here??? https://t.co/jAUFZE5YCT #IsraelIsATerroristState #FreePalestine #auspol
Are we, as a country willing to sacrifice our water and power supplies to an insatiable monster, who will end up poisoning us?
“The estimated 9.3 trillion litres of water used by data centres would meet the drinking water needs of Earth’s 8.1 billion people for about 1.6 years.”
Starting this month, more than 900 deep-sea ocean sensors will be pulled out of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans off the coast of Washington, Oregon, Alaska, North Carolina and Greenland. https://t.co/jmm86WQNcY
A climatological and ecological Black Swan one after another: too hot 🥵 for glaciers, too hot for the fish people, and too hot for agriculture and forests 🌳people. The 1.5°C ‘target’ was a lullaby to lull us, a deadly compromise never to be fulfilled.
🚨 As always, the MIT AI Risk Initiative leaves NO STONE unturned!
Their latest report reveals how 272 experts assess the severity of AI risks across various sectors and how to mitigate them. [Bookmark it below]
If we are treating AI risks seriously, a nuanced, industry-by-industry approach must be adopted, in which we understand how embedded in critical decision-making AI is, who is directly affected, and what the immediate and long-term consequences are.
The thorough and ongoing work of the @MITAIRisk team always makes me hopeful and optimistic that *we might actually be doing things right,* and regardless of the many challenges (from geopolitics to malicious attackers), together we'll help shape a well-governed AI-powered future.
Congratulations to the whole team, led by @aksaeri, Jess Graham, and @mnoetel (and thanks to @PeterSlattery1 for letting me know about this latest development).

Invading a sovereign nation, slaughtering civilians, targeting medics, forcibly expelling people and demolishing their homes isn’t a “strategy,” it’s a list of war crimes.
I'm sorry, I didn't realize Israel had now escalated to the "quadruple tap" where they just keep killing and killing as people try desperately to help the wounded
🦔UC Berkeley's computer science department just posted its worst failure rates in years. 35.3% of CS 10 students got F's in spring 2026, up from under 10% in prior semesters. Professor Dan Garcia says the primary driver is a "vast increase in academic dishonesty" through LLMs. Students use AI to complete assignments, never learn the material, then fail exams. His office hours, once full, are now empty.
My Take
Companies are firing experienced engineers while the pipeline that produces new ones is being gutted by the same technology. Students use AI to bypass the hard part of learning, show up to exams without the understanding, and fail. One professor discovered a student's linear algebra class had an "open AI" policy for homework and exams. That student then couldn't do basic linear algebra in the next course.
Both ends of the workforce are eroding at the same time. Senior engineers are getting cut to fund AI spending. Junior engineers are graduating without the skills because AI did their coursework. And the companies spending trillions on these tools haven't connected those two facts yet.

I just want to SCREAM & CRY! 🥹
Years of battling mines & fracking and now we have to deal with something even worse for wildlife…
AI DATA CENTRES! 😤
@braydenk Or you could just do it the old fashioned way - you know manually code your qual data yourself rather than outsource the thinking and intuition to an LLM or a research assistant.
Fascinating article on the significant problems and epistemic risks in using AI in qualitative research (it basically makes stuff up and can't discern themes and concepts as well as an experienced qual researcher!): https://t.co/nUU4vkic6w
Will Australians ever be consulted? Nope. Data centres are being inflicted on us...like aukus...and billionaires, too many fucking govt subsidised billionaires
Genuinely, can someone give me the steel man version of the rationale behind the new “give everyone AI” university strategy? What is the theory of the case here? Do universities think it’s sustainable to ask students to pay over $90k per year to cheat their way through college?
You can't solve problems you refuse to measure.
Yet this month, 900 ocean monitoring instruments are being physically pulled out of the water. A $368 million system. A decade to build. Designed to run 15 more years.
Gone.
This network tracked hurricane intensity, coastal flooding, marine heatwaves, and sea level rise. The data was free, public and used in over 500 scientific publications. Congress tried to stop it... twice. They got overruled anyway.
For a coastal community like FL-13 that just lived through Helene, this isn't abstract. This is the difference between an evacuation order that comes in time and one that doesn't.
Florida deserves a representative who fights for the science that protects us, not one who looks the other way while it gets dismantled.
