There was a time when motivated students educated themselves, if necessary. Perhaps, if we stop coddling the lazy, they will be motivated to learn life skills, at a minimum

When I went to school, we had paths tailored to abilities, providing foundational tools for everyone, alternative education for those who did not excel academically, and advanced classes for those who did. The criterion was ability, yet it was called racist, and we got 'No Child Left Behind'.

Everyone was put in the same box, and even then, some were unable to succeed, but were promoted anyway, for to do otherwise was also seen as racist. The result: in many cases, 2/3 of graduates cannot spell or do math at grade level and are not hireable. That too was called racist even though it was the fault of the student, not the teachers or administrators.

This was the dumbing down of America, and it was done by design. You have what you want, and I want it, too. The states have control of education. Let's see if we sink below the 24th ranking we have now or correct the trend.
