OneWordReview… #Ramayana: UNDERWHELMING.
Rating: ⭐½
#JaiShriRam… You have seen better, more coherent, and more emotionally grounded films on the Indian screen. Scale is there, but it feels empty. Visuals are loud rather than magnificent. Emotions rarely land. And soul? Missing. A largely hollow cinematic experience.
Does #Ramayana do justice to the timeless epic that holds a special place in the hearts of millions? The answer is a clear no.
Director #NiteshTiwari aims for spectacle but delivers a bloated, uneven film that struggles to honour either the source material’s depth or basic storytelling craft. The screenwriting is loose, the narrative frequently loses momentum, and the pacing feels stretched rather than engrossing. You are not so much captivated as occasionally distracted by the sheer size of the production.
There are several sequences that promise impact but fall short, mixing visual excess with flat drama and limited emotional payoff [no spoilers]:
• The opening exchange between Brahma and Ravana feels stagey and underpowered.
• The forest fight with the rakshasas is more noisy than thrilling.
• The Sita Swayamvar lacks genuine tension or wonder.
• The pre-interval stretch with Dashrath, Kaikeyi, and Rama is overwrought without being moving.
• The Vidyutjeev confrontation is forgettable.
• The Shurpanakha episode is awkwardly handled.
• The Ravana–Jatayu sequence on the Pushpaka Vimana looks impressive in isolation but fails to generate real stakes.
The songs by #ARRahman are serviceable but rarely feel organically woven into the story; several stop the film rather than deepen it. The background score by #HansZimmer and #ARRahman is often overbearing, drowning scenes instead of elevating them.
#DNEG’s visual effects are technically competent in places but frequently artificial and inconsistent—far from the seamless, groundbreaking standard claimed. Action set pieces prioritise scale over clarity or impact, and the production design, while expensive-looking, often feels more like a theme-park approximation than a lived-in world.
#RanbirKapoor remains composed but remote; the performance rarely conveys the required gravity or inner life.
#SaiPallavi is dignified yet underused and emotionally distant. #Yash brings presence but tips into theatrical excess.
#RavieDubey is earnest without being especially memorable. #RakulPreet is competent but leaves little impression.
#SunnyDeol’s appearance is brief and more of a cameo curiosity than a meaningful contribution. #ArunGovil is fine in a limited role. The supporting cast (#Shobhana, #LaraDutta, #VivekOberoi, #SheebaChadha, #AjinkyaDeo) is mostly adequate without standing out.
Final word? #Ramayana is not an experience that makes the screen feel larger. it is a technically ambitious but dramatically hollow film that fails to match either the emotional power of the epic or the best of contemporary Indian (or global) spectacle cinema. Watch it if you must, preferably on the largest screen only because the scale is the main thing on offer; the storytelling and soul are not.
#NamitMalhotra’s ambition is clear, but ambition alone does not make a great film.
@__nndn__@kannanrw7s 1) I didn't specifically say Socrates.
2) What were you trying to prove with Sukrat? That's what I clearly said that Greek philosophers have Indic sounding names.
SS Rajamouli truly the goat. Never relied on violence gimmick. Just pure storytelling and creative action filmmaking.
People really compare him with vanga neel loki and dhar 😭
