This World Environment Day, when the clock struck 7 in the morning, Hyderabad did not celebrate. Hyderabad mourned. 🌳🕯️
Citizens gathered outside KBR National Park carrying placards filled with grief and resistance against the illegal felling of trees for the H-CITI project.
The air echoed with slogans:
“Flyover Oddu, KBR Moddu”
“Save Trees. Save KBR.”
Then came a moment Hyderabad will remember for years.
A symbolic funeral pyre was laid out. Tree trunks felled despite the 2021 High Court stay order were placed upon it and covered in white cloth. Citizens stood in silence, paying homage not just to trees, but to decades of shade, birdsong, cooling air and life erased in a matter of days.
Songs of sorrow were sung in Telugu. Volunteers then carried the symbolic pyre towards Cancer Hospital Chowk. There, a grave was dug and the logs were laid to rest. Sacred threads were tied around them — a reminder that the spirit of KBR’s trees will continue to live within Hyderabad’s resistance. 🌱
Two saplings were planted beside the grave in hope that what was destroyed will rise again.
Artist Ramani Mylavarapu concluded the gathering with a moving performance art act symbolising healing, remembrance and rebirth.
Today, Hyderabad held a funeral not just for trees, but for the dangerous idea that “development” can come by suffocating a city’s last green lung under concrete.

While India’s education system is under threat, so is Hyderabad’s last green lung — KBR National Park. 🌳
This World Environment Day, citizens of Hyderabad organised a symbolic funeral for the massacred trees of KBR because unlike the government’s narrative, flyovers are not a scientific solution to traffic woes — especially not at the cost of a National Park.
No cumulative EIA. No meaningful public hearing. Disregard for the 2021 High Court stay order.
@dhruv_rathee we urge you to take up the #SaveKBR issue and appeal to Hyderabadis to protect their last surviving urban forest before it is too late.

If environmental conservation truly matters, why is @moefcc silent on #SaveKBR?
Can “sustainable growth” come by destroying one of a city’s last surviving urban forests?

After watching this video, do you still believe flyovers are the solution to Hyderabad’s traffic woes? @revanth_anumula@TelanganaToday@INCIndia@RahulGandhi@CommissionrGHMC@GHMCOnline
Because what Hyderabad is witnessing today is more concrete, more bottlenecks, more heat and more chaos — while its last thriving green lung, KBR National Park, is being sacrificed in the name of “development.” 🌳
A city can recover from traffic.
But once a living ecosystem is destroyed, it is gone for generations.
We Hyderabadis need to question our government right now before it's too late to save KBR.

Actor & social worker @poonamkaurlal said something every Hyderabadi needs to hear at today’s “Funeral to Save KBR” 🌳🕯️
“Hyderabadis share a deep relationship with KBR Park, and we must not allow it to be destroyed. 50 of the world’s hottest cities are in India. Why is India becoming like Somalia? Because we are indiscriminately cutting trees.”
Addressing the Chief Minister @revanth_anumula, she added:
“Even you had to cancel a rally because of the heat. Please understand that development cannot come at the cost of the environment.”
On World Environment Day, Hyderabad mourned its fallen trees — but also raised its voice louder than ever for the survival of KBR.

While Nicobar faces destruction from the Great Nicobar Project, Hyderabad’s future is being threatened by the choking of its last green lung — KBR National Park — through flyovers pushed by your own government.
No public hearing. No cumulative EIA. Disregard for the 2021 High Court stay order.
Why this silence on #SaveKBR ? Does environmentalism stop where political convenience begins?
