He was shot by the occupation while trying to reach aid for his starving family. The injuries were devastating. The bullet tore through his lower face, leaving his jaw hanging and piercing his tongue, taking away his ability to speak.
But losing his voice did not mean losing his ability to be heard.
Our speech and occupational therapist, Ms. Iman, taught Suhaib sign language, giving him back a way to communicate with the people around him. At The Sameer Project’s Refaat Alareer Camp, he is also working every day with our physiotherapists, slowly rebuilding his strength and independence.
Recovery is measured in small victories. Every new movement, every sign he learns, every day he grows stronger is another step toward the corrective surgery he desperately needs, and that we hope he’s gets, to one day speaking again.
