@twwilliams @Adman_NZ @getwired @editingemily I thought the acronym became popular among traders. Microsoft was left out because it isn't a buzzy growth stock even though it's a large cap stock in the tech sector
Like @cfiesler, I've gotten a lot of "It's not the algorithm, it's the training data" explanations/responses over the years (including IRL when I give talks), and I want to explain the problem with these 1/ [THREAD]

@racine75@math_rachel@cfiesler The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein focuses on how formalization and data has been used to segregate and descriminate as well as justify status quos throughout american history
Too many people in the field of AI are chasing the latest fashions. My advice: keep your eyes on the fundamentals, focus on the long-term challenges. The important questions are still the same today as they were 20 years ago.
I forced a bot to watch five faculty meetings (approx. 1,000 hours total) and then forced it to write a faculty meeting script of its own. Here is the first page.
@BecomingDataSci i used to get a lot of questions about how to use them for time series. of course the usual questions about how trees are aggregated and why--voting/ranking vs averaging/additive; comparison to XGboost/gradient boost; hypothetical Qs about elaborate ensembling schemes
@dafevara@rctatman@amcasari i used YAML a lot in my last job. the hierarchical and readable nature are great for rich datasets that may be used many different ways. knowing which languages you need compatibility with in advance helps a lot though
@rctatman@A_K_Nain@teoliphant himself acknowledges problems with dtype serialization. that is a big part of what he wants to address with numba. your tip to avoid serialization where ever possible helps to avoid the political problems of serialization, formats, standards etc altogether though👍
Does there seem to be a downward trend in #AI fears and mistrust of #machinelearning or #algorithms? Related blog post on specific artificial intelligence services/products (e.g. self driving cars) to come soon.
Good morning from Dublin to all my followers! Thanks to everyone who stuck around during this patch of radio silence. Some rebranding is in order after months of big moves and a crazy job search, but don't worry, more #MachineLearning and hopefully #opensource projects to come!
@bendhalpern@codinghorror there is way too much gatekeeping in software and the toxic attitudes are more tempting to newly minted devs with imposter syndrome. We all need to be more vigilant in fighting this entrenched worldview bc it can proliferate quickly
