Today is National Threatened Species Day, where we shine the spotlight on all the wildlife that needs our help! 🐸🦜

Australia is full of incredible and unique wildlife, but we have a dark history with extinctions. You would think we would have learnt our lesson? But no, Australia still spends almost nothing on conservation of our environment and we are seeing the cost of this daily - more species decline! 😭❌

Something in this country needs to change so we can properly protect what matters most - our wildlife! 🦘🪲

@nvolpewild The thing that gets me is we're smart enough to figure this out. We dont need palm oil, we dont need exotic wood furniture, and I know from friends in agritech that farming has evolved. This is about cheap, quick and locals under pressure. It's nature that pays the price 💔😢

A male macaque can be made to pick 1,600 coconuts a day. A person picks about 80.

That gap is the entire economics of Thai coconut milk, and it explains why an industry that could hire people instead keeps endangered monkeys on chains.

Both species used are pig-tailed macaques, listed by the IUCN as vulnerable and endangered. Investigators put the number working Thai coconut farms in the thousands, and reckon roughly half were taken from the wild, which is illegal in Thailand. Owning one is punishable with two years inside. That sentence has never once been handed down.

They are taken as infants and sold into what the industry itself calls monkey schools, which the Thai government's own tourism website used to promote until the story broke. Six years of investigations across nine provinces found young animals kept in bare cages, chained to old tyres by rigid metal collars, choking themselves as they paced. Some have their teeth pulled so they cannot bite the handler. In the wild, a pig-tailed macaque does not climb coconut palms and does not pick coconuts. This is not a natural behaviour being harnessed. It is a behaviour installed.

British retailers moved fast once it was filmed. Sainsbury's, Tesco, Aldi, Asda, Co-op and eventually Morrisons all stopped sourcing own-brand coconut milk from the implicated Thai supply. Around 40,000 stores worldwide pulled linked brands. The Commons registered an early day motion about it.

Then the follow-up investigations found the practice continuing, with inspections announced in advance and the monkeys moved off site for the visit. The certification that was supposed to guarantee a monkey-free coconut cannot currently be relied on, which is the standard ending for this kind of story.

Coconut milk is the base of every dairy-free curry, every vegan ice cream, most of the barista alternatives and a great deal of what gets photographed as clean eating.

Nobody put a chain on a cow to get the cream.
