An important reason for the irrelevance of nuclear weapons, for anything other than deterring and retaliation against an existential attack, is that most targets that could only be destroyed in the first missile age with nukes can now be destroyed with conventional weapons.

In the first missile age, the weapons were so inaccurate that you needed the high yield of nuclear weapons to compensate for the large CEPs. In the second missile age, the CEPs are so low that you can easily get a mission kill with conventional payloads.

Take the most important targets. Aircraft on the apron, ICBM silos, HAS, C2, infrastructure, whatever. None of that today requires a nuclear weapon. The use cases have dwindled down to urban populations; nukes as city killers.

Nuclear weapons can be used. But their purpose cannot be military. They can only be used for signaling. First use in particular has the strongest of all signals. Schelling pointed out that the taboo itself is a powerful shared resource: no other action can convince the enemy of the seriousness of your situation as well as breaking the nuclear taboo. This is a strong reason to preserve the tradition of no first use.

Then there is the matter of a minimum number of years' contributions to qualify even for the comparatively low basic pension.

We need to be careful, but there are real signs Putin is losing support as a result of how badly the war in Ukraine is going for him. Here is what the evidence actually shows:

1) Recruitment is falling even as pay hits records. Q1 2026 enlistment was the lowest in three years, down 20%, with signing bonuses at an all-time high of 1.47 million rubles.

2) Elites stopped saying "we." A former Kremlin official notes officials now describe what "he" does, not what "we" do. Quiet, deliberate distancing.

3) The economic bargain is breaking. GDP forecast slashed to 0.4%. Oil and gas revenue down 45% year-on-year. The deficit blew past its full-year target in three months.

4) Wage arrears nearly doubled in a year. State media were told to bury the numbers. Pro-Kremlin outlets published, then deleted, the figures.

5) Strikes are back. Vorkuta miners unpaid since December. The pattern that haunted late Yeltsin is returning, region by region.

6) Putin is in the bunker. Shortest Victory Day guest list in modern history. No heavy weapons. Pre-recorded footage while he hides from his own elite.

7) State pollster VTsIOM logged seven straight weeks of decline. Approval fell to 65.6% from 77.8% at the start of the year. FOM, the pollster the Kremlin tells loyal media to cite, put Putin's performance at its lowest since the first days of the 2022 invasion. So even state polls show this but of course, exaggarate his support/

The implication: this is erosion of the foundations, not imminent collapse. The war's appeal, the elite's faith, and the economic deal are all failing at once. Putin still holds power, but on fear, not belief. He is bleeding support due to Ukraine. That is a motive to end this.

Palestinian farmers from Khirbet Wadi a-Rakhim in the South Hebron Hills noticed, on Saturday, 7 March 2026, four Israeli settlers, armed with sticks and clubs, grazing cattle on the farmers’ private land. They called the police and went over to the settlers, filming the incident. They demanded the settlers leave and tried to drive them and their cattle away from the crops. A violent confrontation developed as the residents tried to defend their land, during which one Palestinian resident and one settler were injured.

At some point, the farmers began moving away. Meanwhile, a settler named Luria Luski arrived in military uniform, carrying a rifle, on an ATV together with his brother, Shem Tov Luski. After that, the settlers went back to attacking the residents with clubs and stones. One of them beat Muhammad Shinaran, 57, on the head and legs with a club. His son Amir, 28, started coming his way to help his father. Luria Luski fired a shot in the air and when Amir continued approaching, pointed his gun at him and shot him dead. Immediately afterward, he fired again, injuring Amir’s brother Khaled, 33. The two brothers were taken to Beita Hospital, where Amir was pronounced dead.

Only after the injured men were taken to hospital did large military and police forces arrive. The soldiers invaded residents’ homes and searched them, confining women and children in a kitchen until 9:30 P.M. They took the recording device from the home’s security camera recording and left.

Luski claimed he acted in self-defense, yet Israel never even interrogated him.

From October 2023 and to May 30, 2026, Israel killed 1,082 Palestinians in the West Bank, 35 of them killed by settlers. Under Israel’s apartheid regime, Palestinian lives continue to be treated as utterly expendable.

You can make an argument that people in public sector service roles should not display political insignia. But only if you apply that universally and not make Palestine the exception. I was once asked to remove a Palestine badge by security at parliament. (There is a rule, bizarre as it seems, that you cannot wear political insignia in parliament). Next to me in queue was someone wearing a Ukraine badge. When I challenged why that wasn't being removed the answer was " that's not political". This is all part of the project by Israel and its allies to toxify support for Palestinian rights as something extreme , sinister and outside the boundaries of acceptable discourse, usually via narratives of antisemitism or support for terrorism. Its power is diminishing in the context of the genocide which has been livestreamed. People know what they have seen. But that doesn't mean the political establishment will still not try to use the playbook to repress, grotesquely framing opposition to war crimes and atrocities as a threat to Jewish safety, in this case the safety of Jewish patients. In doing so they undermine amy consistent antiracism, dehumanising Palestinians by suggesting bringing the facts of their oppression into the public domain and demanding an end to UK complicity with it , is something harmful. In the Health sector, the worst example of this was the successful campaign by @UKLFI to get a hospital to remove a display of pottery plates made by children from Gaza , on the basis that the images of Palestinian life and culture prevented Jewish patients attending the hospital. These initiatives must be resisted by all who believe that standing in support of principles of justice and rights and against the crimes of genocide and apartheid is not simply a right but a profound moral duty.

Apartheid South Africa and Nazi Germany needed compliant judges to provide a legal veneer to their darkest crimes.

Judge Johnson joins their wretched company. He overturned a jury's conviction of four anti-genocide activists for criminal damage and sentenced them as terrorists instead.

As one their barristers pointed out, the four defendants were initially arrested by police on suspicion of involvement in an act of terrorism. But the prosecution decided not to charge them with terrorism offences because it knew no jury would ever convict them based on the evidence.

Instead the Crown held two trials: a sham one for the jury, and the real one conducted in secret by the judge. That is not justice. It is a show trial worthy of the worst tyrannical regimes.
