@isthisandrewidk@ILLUMlNAUGHTY The reason people defend this is the same as the reason we have Brandon Johnson instead of Mamdani, I guess: Chicago has a really stupid left
@ILLUMlNAUGHTY There is literally already an electrified train line in this corridor. Just run more trains on that and spend these billions of dollars on anything else of actual use to the inhabitants of the city.
@NewLeftEViews French polling systematically underestimates Mélenchon's support, and he has a whole campaign to win over refractory voters. The other candidates are politically indistinguishable from Le Pen anyway
@32_Blessings SNTV is nothing like the Irish system. The point of STV is that the vote is transferable and this allows it to approximate proportional representation. SNTV is just first past the post with multi-member districts. You are unfathomably stupid.
@ShinMarginalScr What? No it's not. Every worker in France is eligible to vote in union elections, whether they're in a union or not. No parallel system exists in the US or UK.
@Dietz__Tweetz@Eric_Erins It's extremely dramatic. You can walk everywhere. The food isn't poisonous. Life is cheap. People are more sociable and less stressed out about work. The weather's nice. Vastly higher level of ambient culture.
@Eric_Erins The dream is to work remotely from a small town in southern Europe. You can take a pay cut from what you'd earn in person in the US and still live a much better life.
@Paul_Heron_ My god, man! The Louvre became a public museum during the Revolution! The Bibliothèque Nationale is filled with books seized during the Revolution! Every great French institution has its origins in the fact that some peasants stormed a prison and executed the king!
@Paul_Heron_ Every young person in France at some point or another goes to a manif. I did myself, when I lived there. It's part of the culture, and it's a sign the country is still functioning in a way most other western societies aren't.
@Paul_Heron_ The idea that the people can achieve political goals by protest strengthens social bonds, it doesn't weaken them. The fact that the French do this every few years is precisely what perpetuates French belief in their national myth of being a light to the world.
