Bengali PhD scholar in the United Kingdom. The British taxpayer pays me. Contrary to popular belief, I'm not Muslim or Brit or Marxist. Unapologetic RadLib.
@brdmoedr literally zero consistency btw. the only thing that's been consistent is the xenophobia. went from Labour to flirting with Yorp to the Greens and back to Labour when Burnham became PM.
This glup shitto Red Wall racism isn't gonna play there:
1. Scotland has a higher share of international student revenue as part of exports
2. It has more incentive re: HE being free for Scots & subsidised by this
3. Population is disproportionately in the Central Belt
Yeah totally, Labour should run on a platform of explicitly trying to destroy the Scottish HE system when there's already anger there over Westminster causing a crisis in multiple Scottish universities.
This will totally not backfire on them...
@vinismus Yeah meant that, see the second tweet in the thread. Like it's been a massive shock to me how ill-read and closed-off a lot of wannabe leftist intellectuals in the West are.
I'm genuinely thankful these days that my socialisation into leftist politics happened in West Bengal under the influence of the Turbo Revisionist CPI(M) where party apparatchiks didn't think mainstream economics and statistics were fake & gay & would encourage you to study it.
We do have rent control in practice precisely because rents cannot be raised without facing a complicated legal challenge that may not go the way of the landlord since Labour passed the Renterโs Right Act.
Itโs fine if youโre an incumbent, but bad if youโre looking for a place.
@ProgDirectorate Hilarious tbqh thinking that glup shitto red wall racism is gonna play in a place where the vast majority of the population lives in a cosmopolitan urban belt.
@cynicoidAlt No I mean I had friends in the CPI(M) who were studying economics and the departments they studied in were run by apparatchiks and they'd encourage you to read proper textbooks etc.
@Obseyxx See the issue with rent control advocates is that whenever you point to it having pretty bad effects on the housing market wherever it was implemented; the answer is โwell they didnโt do it exactly how I wantedโ without pointing out what would not have said effects and why.
The economic case for hosting big events like the Olympics is a weak one. There is a risk that taxpayers' money will be splurged and we'll be left with a load of white elephants.
We haven't built a reservoir in this country since 1992.
So, increasingly, people are being left without running water, for days at a time.
It can't go on like this. We have to take on the blockers who veto every project, and get Britain building.
@LeftieStats@Tom_Gann I caveated it with โI canโt speak to Britainโ.
But I also do think if you cannot find workarounds to this, one should genuinely just give up at that point.
@Jackbmeyer UK centric opinion of mine: but the cuts here have been across the board with multiple universities on the brink of collapse and anyone trying to clown on some other department is also owning themselves.
