Maybe it’s time to admit @LiuNewYork@RJackson_NYC@ClassSizeMatter’s Small Class Size Law is failing to incentivize families to stay. Families care about school & teacher quality, not costly mandates that could shuffle children around.
#QualityNotQuantity
A trend that, if it continues, would dramatically reshape NYC's school system. Here are @NYC_SCA's most recent school enrollment projections, which predict a PreK-12 population of 662,000 in 2032 -- a drop of 230,000 students in 10 years.
We predicted this. Unfortunately, teacher union shills refuse to admit reality 😞
“New York City’s highest-poverty schools could experience an exodus of teachers in the coming years, an unintended consequence of a sweeping class size mandate, according to a new report.”
This reaction from the private school parent who forced through the Small Class Size Law by any means necessary is epitome of tone deafness. We warned of unintended consequences but you ignored the parents who have skin in the game.
@SusanBEdelman But same DOE document says if a school doesn't hear back from the parent & thus doesn't get their consent, they can keep their child in the remote class anyway! That's not consent, it's opt-out - a far weaker provision & means parents who don't get or see opt-out form lose out.
Small class size sounds great but it’s not the panacea the @LiuNewYork@RJackson_NYC@UFT@ClassSizeMatter@leoniehaimson claim it to be. There’s plenty of examples within @NYCSchools that already meet the mandate where a vast majority of students are not meeting grade level work
PS25 in Bklyn D16 has just 55 kids in the entire school. Class sizes ranged from 6-18 kids for past 6 years, w/declining enrollment. With low student to teacher ratio and funding at $45K per student, only 1/3 are grade level proficient in reading and math.
The problem is NOT large class size or inadequate funding so why are we always trying to solve for those.
Complying with the law to lower class size at the expense of our kids @NYCSchools ! Have we not learned what remote learning does to our kids @DOEChancellor@LiuNewYork ?!? How is virtual learning even on the bargaining table? Do you not care @UFT what it has done to our kids?!?
If you thought that the Small Class Size won’t affect your child because they’re already enrolled in high school, think again. The inflexibility of the law has the potential to cut important programs for all students. @LiuNewYork#FixTheFlaws
Rumor has it that Bronx Science will cut 30% of its seats to comply with the class size law. Also reduce AP offerings that 60% of the kids now take. #AmendTheLaw@LiuNewYork@DOEChancellor

Small Class Size Law
How it started: sound basic education, equity, better outcomes
What it’s become: bussing kids to under-enrolled schools, redistribute funding to wealthier districts, remote “learning”

@queens_parents@LiuNewYork@DOEChancellor@NYCSchools This law has put the DOE into an impossible situation with only bad options for extremely overcrowded districts. Please sign our open letter to amend the law.

Over 70% of classrooms in Queens & SI do not meet Class Size Law limits. A majority of Brooklyn & Manhattan classrooms also do not comply. Without significant construction underway (which it isn't), reality is @NYCSchools won't meet the law unless they get more time.
