Because the US women’s team (and their goalie) performed up to expectations. They have medaled in every single Olympics since the inclusion of women’s hockey. The women were absolute monsters as a team with Frankel often facing less than 10 shots a game. They won as a TEAM. The men however would not have won the gold without Hellebuyck. They were outshot (by almost double) and it was only the saves made by Hellebuyck in that game that allowed the US men to win. The men (specifically their goalie) overperformed, and it was that individual effort that is being recognized.
