Sir Keir Starmer has been accused of misleading the public over the VAT on fees policy, after suggesting it will be used to fund housing, not state school improvements

This is awkward, @bphillipsonMP@RachelReevesMP: “Efficiency savings” = more teacher redundancies. So much for those 6,500 new recruits.
How about giving us our VAT back so we can keep our kids in their schools—and off the state burden? Every little helps.

The House of Lords has voted against the government's plan to end business rates relief for independent schools. Peers voted by a majority of 91 to remove the key provision from the Non-Domestic Rates (Multipliers and Private Schools) Bill

You say you welcome debate, @bphillipsonMP—so prove it. Join your colleagues on March 3rd and debate #SchoolFeeVAT. The consequences since its implementation are clear, and despite your pre-VAT confidence, the realities demand urgent review:
📉 Rising fees—VAT hasn’t been absorbed, parents are paying more
🏫 State school pressure—you predicated 3000 displaced students, more than 10,000 already forced into an overstretched system
💷 Higher costs for all—inflation up, interest rates stay higher for longer
⚠️ Unintended consequences—schools cutting bursaries & staff

Last night a government source said: ‘The Secretary of State doesn’t need lectures from anyone on importance of a good education for disadvantaged children, she’s lived it.https://t.co/qEpgP9NzJj
And that there is the issue. @bphillipsonMP has a lot to unpack, and her past is clearly raw for her for which I empathise. But she needs to see that it is HER past and HER experience and however difficult that is, she cannot apply that blueprint to other children today. Her story is hers. @EducationNotTax
It’s ok to use private health to support a broken nhs but not for private schools to support a broken state education system?! Help me understand? @Keir_Starmer@bphillipsonMP@EducationNotTax
“Many parents…who have children with autism know that their children don’t have time to spare & therefore they choose independent education because it guarantees (they) can access the support & environment they need in order to be able to learn.” https://t.co/oSwDy9ypz7
BBC reports @Keir_Starmer said, on expanding the private sector to support the NHS, “I’m not interested in putting ideology before patients”. In the same week the Education Tax has begun forcing children out of schools. Only interested in putting ideology before children then?
@ISC_schools@Telegraph I fail to see how this policy stands up to scrutiny- IS bring in £14.5bn in tax, saves the state a further £4bn in education costs. Surely, if this was a government championing growth; they should not actively be destroying a world renowned, profitable industry.
@ISC_schools@Telegraph But I thought the @UKLabour manifesto specifically stated the VAT £ would be available for state school funding, and this was further confirmed by @RachelReevesMP. They can’t have lied surely? There must be some dreadful accounting error. Who did the maths? Oh wait….
Billions of pounds Labour claims it will raise from VAT on fees will not be ringfenced for state schools, @Telegraph reports, despite Rachel Reeves's assurances that it would https://t.co/wFZ09OIwjo
@EducationNotTax I know many parents far richer than us who bought nearer to good state schools. We chose to pay for the education of ours. What’s the difference? Labour’s spiteful envy.
All parents want the best for their child.
🏡 Some buy homes in the 'right' catchments for top state schools, enjoying excellent free education and tax-free property gains.
🧑🏫 Others pay for tuition to secure coveted state Grammar school places.
💵 Some opt to pay for independent schools, saving the state the £7.5k+ cost of their child's education.
😔Some kids don’t get any of those choices, and state schools need extra funding to offer them.
BUT why should only those who opt for independent schools face extra taxes? It’s a political choice. It’s unfair and won’t deliver the £.
#FindABetterWay to fund schools through better tax choices so ALL children thrive. 📚

Good god. Yesterday, the Government Whip on duty objected to and blocked the bill to fund children’s hospices.
Today, it turns out their Education Tax allows the exchequer to profit off disabled kids and tax SEN.
They are the new “nasty” party.

The silence from the Government is deafening. @bphillipson the leader of the IFS says it wont make any money, @RachaelMaskell says it will harm SEND kids, @MattRodda has written a paper on the harm of an in year move but STILL she carries on.

Exactly. VAT on fees/decimating independent schools is not going to make best education accessible to all, nor is it taxing the ones with broad shoulders (state school rich not contributing), it doesn't raise significant sums. It is meant to just stroke envy of can't/won't have
