He's been going around removing manhole covers. Children play on that green. I rang the council and they've cordoned off the manhole.

Foie gras production has been illegal in the UK since 2007, but imported foie gras is still allowed.

Our Executive Director, Edie Bowles, commented that instead of bending our standards to secure a trade deal, the government should be banning imports of products made through practices so cruel we've already outlawed them at home.

A 29-year-old dad drowned his own baby in a bucket of detergent to “teach his wife a lesson”.

This monster held his tiny, defenceless child under the toxic chemicals, forcing the baby to inhale and swallow the detergent until he stopped breathing.

The child suffered an agonising death from chemical burns to the lungs and internal organs.

The UN has repeatedly stated that richer industrialised nations should finance poorer countries for climate loss and damage.

Now the International Court of Justice has issued an advisory opinion saying states have legal obligations relating to climate harm.

And the UK Government has endorsed the UN resolution AND welcomed it. (WTF???)

So tell me… when African governments and activist lawyers start arguing that Britain’s Industrial Revolution caused climate damage, what exactly do ministers think will happen? Remember Chagos?

Every single step is presented as “non-binding” or “just guidance”. But as we’ve seen with our quangos, guidance becomes rules and even court cases.

In the hills above Petorca, in central Chile, there used to be rivers.

Children swam in the La Ligua and the Petorca. The valleys held small fields of beans, corn and potatoes, and the mountainsides held cattle, sheep and goats, the way mountainsides have held them since anyone kept count. It was dry country. It had always been dry country. Every seven years or so a drought came through, and the animals and the people got through it, because that is what animals and people on a dry hillside had learned to do.

Then, in the 1990s, the avocado arrived.

Investors bought the mountainsides cheap, because Chile lets you buy the water rights and keep them and resell them like shares. They planted avocados on slopes that were never meant to grow avocados, and an avocado is a thirsty thing. Around two thousand litres of water for a single kilo. They dug wells. When the wells were not enough, according to Chile's own water authority, some dug illegal ones, and laid illegal pipes, and pulled the rivers into the orchards a channel at a time. By 2011 the satellites had found dozens of these hidden channels feeding the plantations.

The rivers are gone now. Serpents of dry gravel where the water used to run.

The people who once drank from those rivers get their water from a truck. Fifty litres a day, per person, delivered twice a week, and when it was tested it came back with more faecal bacteria than the law allows. They boil it, or they buy bottles, or they go without washing so they can cook. The graffiti in the town says don't rob our water. The activists who say it out loud have had death threats.

And every kilo of it lands on a plate in London or Los Angeles under the word wholesome. Smashed on sourdough. Photographed from above. A little emblem of a person doing the right thing by the planet.

The cattle that used to graze those hills drank rainfall. They put nothing on a truck and drained no one's tap.

The avocado drank the village.
