As the rising number of vessels in the icy waters increases the risk of environmental disaster, scientists are scrambling to find potential solutions

Vital Arctic sea ice shrank to tie its lowest measured level for the winter, the season when ice grows, as a warming Earth shattered records across the continents. https://t.co/vT6gLIj06Y @AP

New Arctic emission control areas are finally in force — tightening limits on ship pollution in some of the world’s most vulnerable waters. 🌊❄️
A step in the right direction… but with delays before full compliance and key issues still unresolved, it’s more progress in motion than mission accomplished. Because protecting the Arctic shouldn’t come with a waiting period. @CleanArctic@HELLENICSHIP

#ClimateChange is redefining the meaning of the phrase “at a glacial pace”.
On #WorldGlaciersDay, Rosie Witton reflects on trips to glaciers on 4 continents and “last-chance” tourism to melting glaciers as a way to rouse more climate action.

Ship scrubbers on cruise vessels continue to poison Alaska's beautiful waters and coastlines. For every ton of heavy fossil fuel burned, open-loop scrubbers from ships can create nearly 45 tons of contaminated, acidic, and heavy-metal-filled water, threatening marine life and human health. At long last, legislation is being drafted by Alaska State Sen. Jesse Kiehl that could restrict scrubber use and force cruise ships to use cleaner fuels. It's time to stop polluting our waters and ban scrubbers globally!

“Black carbon is one of longest, unresolved issues running at @IMOHQ & must be dealt with without delay. A strong agreement on polar fuels can set rules which will reduce black carbon emission levels from shipping in Arctic. We can not wait another year before taking next steps”.
“To complement ECAs it is essential @IMOHQ regulate ship emissions of black carbon impacting Arctic. Since black carbon pollution is transported in the atmosphere, a regulation must apply throughout the whole Arctic & not just waters where sea or glacier ice can be expected”
