A network of journalists tracking progress on UN and EU climate deals for the international shipping sector, one knot at a time.
NOT affiliated with @IMOHQ.
Wouldn't it be nice if shipping *Billionaires* were as eager to stump up cash to pay for their vast CO2 emissions, as they are to pay toll charges to Iran

Around the world, local actions shape a global movement for nature. 🌍
On #BiodiversityDay, IMO joins the @UN

US claims to care deeply about the potential cost of trade impacts of climate measures are being met with more than a chuckle by some delegates, after it started a war of choice that has made bunker fuel prices double, and worsened global food security.
Behind brash US rhetoric against the IMO Net Zero Framework, there's a complex mix of interests
The v. powerful American biofuels lobby has written to Sec. Rubio, sounding quite supportive of carbon pricing at IMO!
(as long as it incentivizes biofuels 😀)

@ChathamHouse Will the US use illegal bullying tactics again at IMO talks this week, to try to prevent progress on the IMO Net Zero Framework?
Would be great to see the UK standing up to this
Global shipping is highly vulnerable to oil shocks.
Delegates at @IMOHQ can do nothing and continue to see oil & gas price spikes damage their economies, or they can start the hard but necessary work of getting ships off fossil fuels altogether.

Oil-fueled wars driving up the price of bunker fuel 2X are massively strengthening the case for cost-saving green tech like wind-assisted propulsion, and for adopting policies at IMO to speed up this upgrade.

Fair play to @IMOHQ chief @ArsenioDoming11 - a voice of calm and reason during US-Iran war and Hormuz crisis.
This moment may ironically prove to the US how essential multilateralism is, after the US has done so much to undermine it at IMO recently.

The "LNG is a bridge fuel" fairy tale is dead
Why build expensive, long-term import infrastructure for a dirty commodity - gas- prone to geopolitical ransom when you can buy dispatchable solar for less than $80/MW?

When the International Maritime Organization calls an emergency meeting, you know something serious is happening at sea.
Politics is no longer the only issue surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. It has to do with people. Around 20,000 seafarers are stuck in the Gulf right now 🚢
Waiting. Uncertain. Carrying the stress of a situation they didn’t choose.
Ships are slowing down, rerouting, or even stopping because this route handles an important amount of the world's oil. But while trade can adjust, crew safety cannot wait. The IMO is now getting involved to discuss threats, safeguards, and future developments.
So what should come first right now? Trade flow or crew safety?

Shipping companies are learning the hard way that LNG is a volatile, unreliable energy source
Asian LNG prices doubled in just two days after Straits of Hormuz shut down, according to media reports
After production at Qatar's massive 77 mtpa LNG facility ended, Shell plc declared a force majeure on LNG cargoes related to QatarEnergy. When the largest LNG trader in the world delays deliveries, it becomes a market issue rather than a business issue.
This is where geopolitics has a significant commercial impact on the shipping and energy markets. If the shutdown continues into April, supply planning, charter rates, and tanker schedules may all change.
Global power markets, shipping lanes, and terminals can all be affected by a single disruption at the source. The timing of LNG trade is essential and the clock is currently unreliable.

The Strait of Hormuz is a key global shipping chokepoint, carrying about a quarter of seaborne oil and significant volumes of liquefied natural gas and fertilizers.
What do current disruptions mean for global trade and development?

HSFO prices up 40% since US-Iran war started.
VLSFO in Singapore now over $800/mt
All this started by Trump who said he opposed the IMO Net Zero Framework because he was worried about higher fuel costs.
Really could not make it up.

🐳After the hugely successful ban on commercial whaling 40 years ago, the biggest threat to whales now is cargo ships hitting them, killing an estimated 20,000 whales each year 🚢🤯
So how are we going to protect whales this time?
Will we ever see a strong stance from @IMOHQ?
