The first Kenyan to open a petrol station was Fred Mbiyu Koinange, the father of Citizen TV host Jeff Koinange.

Well, Fred was the son of Senior Chief Koinange Wa Mbiyu after whom Koinange Street is named in the Nairobi CBD.

The then 41-year-old opened Koinange Petrol Station - Kenya’s first indigenous - in Kariokor area in 1966 - the year he died.

Fred Mbiyu was also the first African Kenyan to open a car dealership in 1948 when Mr Cooper was also opening the Cooper Motor Corporation (CMC Motors) in a wooden hut along Jackson Road - now Parliament Road.

The first African-owned clothing ‘supermarket’ was Njiiris Limited.

I was just thinking about my brother's journey and I'm honestly blown away.

The guy scored 296/500 marks in KCPE and still went on to get an A at Miwani Secondary. Then he became the valedictorian of the BSc Biochemistry class at Egerton, earned a Master's with Distinction and the Vice-Chancellor's Award.

The crazy part? He secured his Master's scholarship before even graduating with his Bachelor's, and his PhD scholarship at Oklahoma State University before finishing his Master's.
And now I'm finding out from the Uni that poached him from
OSU that he won the Top Poster Award at ISTH 2025 in Washington, D.C., standing out among 1,500+ research presentations.
How do you even do all that? 😂
