A Nigerian born into religion is, in many ways, a Nigerian born incapacitated. Incapacitated from functioning individually in Nigeria and as a Nigerian. This is because religion, in practical terms, offers little utility to the average Nigerian confronting the realities of Nigerian life.

There is no use of religion against the economic policies of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. There is no use of religion against the man-know-man culture that determines access to opportunities in Nigeria. There is no use of religion against state-sponsored impunity, insecurity, and institutional decay. In truth, religion is not being used to rescue Nigeria; Nigeria is being used to sustain religion.

Yet the average Nigerian, characteristically and disappointingly, has not attained the anger required to confront what religion has done to him, to the generations before him, and to the generations yet to come. Perhaps he is not aware. Perhaps he is not courageous enough to admit the role religion has played in numbing his civic instincts. And so, at best, he converts a lifetime of religious devotion into passivity and indifference; at worst, he becomes a fanatic.

The problem is not only that religion has no tangible use in the practical struggles of the Nigerian. The deeper problem is that the average Nigerian refuses to acknowledge the futility of religion in the civic cause of his life. Nigeria’s problems are not spiritual problems. They are overwhelmingly man-made systems of corruption, patronage, incompetence, and exploitation. Religion cannot solve these problems. At most, it anesthetizes the population while the problems persist.

But if religion is not useful to Nigeria, Nigeria is extremely useful to religion.
It's why a man is building the biggest worship center in world in Nigeria - the poverty capital of the world. Nigeria is useful to religion. So are Nigerians.

Religion thrives under the very conditions that plague the country. It thrives under harsh economic policies. It thrives in a man-know-man society where fairness is scarce. It thrives in the insecurity, uncertainty, and hardship that Nigeria rarely fails to stamp upon her citizens. Where suffering is abundant, religion multiplies.

There is religion because Nigeria is the way it is. Religion, in this sense, is not a solution, it is a consequence. In your religiosity you're suffering the consequences of being a Nigerian.

It is therefore difficult to be a Nigerian and not eventually develop some degree of disdain for religion’s role in the national condition. Nigeria is precisely the kind of environment in which religion flourishes. But while religion may thrive in Nigeria, Nigerians themselves can never truly thrive within religion.

Yet many Nigerians never arrive at the disdain necessary to free themselves from this captivity. And this failure occurs for two intertwined reasons. First, there is a cognitive inability to recognize that their dependence on religion is the first-order effect of Nigeria’s systemic failures. Second, there is an unwillingness to confront the fact that this very dependence helps sustain those failures.

The cycle is vicious and self-reinforcing. The more Nigeria collapses, the more Nigerians turn to religion for relief. The more they turn to religion, the less they confront the systems responsible for their suffering. And the less they confront those systems, the deeper Nigeria sinks into dysfunction. In that sinking religion thrives.

Thus the Nigerian suffers, and then returns to religion to explain the suffering that Nigeria itself has produced.

Confidential sources say Nigeria's president is seriously ill — not overworked, not jet-lagged, sick. It's said advanced cancer -- at least stage three, and that's from older intel. The Paris trips aren't diplomatic. They're medical. This is common knowledge in the real corridors of Abuja. The question stopped being "whether" a long time ago.

So who's running Nigeria while the president manages his health in France?

Nigeria has been here before. Yar'Adua died. Goodluck Jonathan stepped in, governed with honor, was declared the loser of the election, and walked away to save his country from the fire. The world respected him.

Shettima is the anti-Jonathan. He won't walk away. He'll pour fuel on that fire. An unelected northern president ascending in the middle of a genocide, while millions of Nigerians believe him to be a co-founder of Boko Haram. That is a recipe for disaster.

The president is wasting away. His wife is running the room. His spymaster got spied on and kept the job. Bugsy and the Shambassador have a 2031 campaign running on your money. And the VP nobody elected is one medical report away from the most dangerous unelected presidency in African history.

The Nigerian press won't print this. I just did.

Dear African people, the western Democratic system we've copied is a death trap. Today, tomorrow and in 10,000 years, it will not yield anything positive for us.
