In 1831, French aristocrat Alexis de Tocqueville traveled to the US to study democracy.
He saw some positives, but also noted a few flaws such as:
-tyranny of the majority
-isolated individuals
-materialism
He claimed religion was essential to prevent these dangers...🧵
Since water privatisation under Margaret Thatcher in 1989, more than *72 billion pounds* has been paid in dividends to shareholders.
Water bills have rocketed by more than *360 percent.*
Investment has been cut.
And now *record* quantities of sewage is being pumped into our rivers and seas.
*90%* of the world has water in public ownership.
*82%* of voters want that here too.
And so when will the government listen and bring Thames Water and the industry back into public ownership?
I watched this happen on the morning of 4 June 1989 in Chang’an Avenue, near Tiananmen Square, the morning after the night’s massacre. Don’t believe the propaganda lie that no massacre took place: I saw 40 people killed in front of me before giving up counting in despair.
The Rise of Hitler: A History of How Democracy Fell in Germany and Its Parallels to Today
🧵1/11: His past was steeped in scandal—a felon, accused of treason and sedition, his actions and rhetoric frequently straddling the line of legality. He was convicted for attempting to overthrow the government, yet this criminal history didn’t disqualify him.
It only made him more appealing to those who viewed the establishment as corrupt and broken. Instead of disqualifying him, his criminal record and charges became part of his defiant charm, painting him as an outsider willing to fight the system.
Every accusation, every charge of treason, only fueled his rise, showing his supporters that he could not be tamed and was the only one willing to challenge the powers that had held the nation in their grip.

I’m surprised what’s happened in Switzerland isn’t a bigger story.
An entire town wiped off the map by a glacier collapsing, likely as a direct result of our warming climate.
This is like something out of a disaster movie.

Local police then arrested the teen daughter of woman ICE had just detained for being "hostile."
