Charging providers and EV owners also depend on policy certainty to make investments with confidence.

Yesterday’s announcement delaying stronger tailpipe standards compromises this certainty and steepens the climb to get back on track.

NEW: Our latest report shows how Canada can grow its EV charging network for a net zero future—expanding it to meet the federal government’s commitment of 90% EV market share by 2040.⚡️

But there are major gaps in Canada’s fast-charging network today. Governments can help apartment and condo residents overcome hurdles to accessing chargers, and help fill gaps in rural and remote areas (see the orange strips on the map⬇️).

Yesterday’s announcement that the Carney government will delay vehicle emissions standards steepens the climb to reach its own commitments on electric vehicles, affordability, and energy security.

While climate progress since the Paris agreement has improved projections, it’s not enough. With deeper emissions cuts, removal of CO2 from the atmosphere, and more renewable power the world can avoid the current path of 2.1 C-2.8 C warming.

[Canadian Climate Institute @ClimateInstit]

New UN report: the world still has a chance to limit warming to 1.7-1.8 C and eventually bring temps back down to 1.5 C. That requires cutting global emissions by 18% by 2030, and by another 69% by 2040. 👇 https://t.co/k0EX74G1ah

Atlantic Canada has an enormous opportunity to generate nationally significant amounts of clean energy with onshore and offshore wind power.

Great to see Nova Scotia’s massive Wind West project take another step ahead with $100M from the federal government, as part of the Atlantic Energy Strategy.

On top of that, many smaller emitters that previously opted into the market to avoid the consumer fuel charge have exited the system.

It means fewer emissions are now covered by a carbon price.

The latest data shows the Canada-Alberta MOU agreement didn’t fix the problems with industrial carbon markets in the province.

Carbon credit prices are still trading at rock-bottom prices—too low to incentivize big investments in emissions reductions.🧵

Today’s announcement of federal funds to upgrade Canadian homes gives a modest boost to electrify the buildings sector and improve affordability and energy security. That’s an important step forward, but more will be needed to increase those benefits.

NEW: Our latest early estimate of Canada’s national emissions shows higher gas use drove up emissions in 2025. But clean electrification can help steer Canada back toward net zero.

The EU is a global pacesetter on clean energy and decarbonization. By seeking closer economic ties, Canada can also follow the lead of its European allies on meeting its climate goals.

Seeking closer ties with the European Union gives Canada the opportunity to focus more squarely on the future, not the past.
