Explainer: For Africa, Finance is a Key Agenda at #COP30noBrasil
Africa is heading into COP30 with access to climate finance as a top priority. Without adequate funding, the continent cannot transition to clean energy, build resilience against climate risks, or invest in sustainable, green growth.
From clean water to education, from public transport to housing, local governments are at the frontlines of turning human rights into action.
But how can they go further?
🗺️ Our new Guidance for Human Rights Cities, developed with @uclg_org and other partners, helps local governments implement human rights with local solutions—through inclusive policies, smart budgets, and sustainable procurement.

2+ billion people can’t get the medicine and vaccines they need, not because we can’t make it, but because the system puts profit before people.

The climate crisis is laying waste to lives & livelihoods.
We must drastically speed up the reduction of emissions & deliver on global promises:
To double energy efficiency & triple renewables capacity by 2030.
And to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuel.

The Sheer Scale of food wastage all over the world and the concomitant effects of this on our environment and goodwill to fight #hunger and malnutrition should give anyone a serious cause for concern.
#StopFoodWaste
Food loss and waste generate 8–10% of global greenhouse gases, nearly 5x more than aviation.
Yet at least 1 billion meals are wasted daily, even as hunger persists.
UNEP’s report shows the scale of food wasted worldwide and what can be done to #BeatWastePollution: https://t.co/I7bijPeYko
We can no longer afford to play the ostrich. #climate change and its consequences are here.

At today's Lagos Investors Summit, we unveiled a groundbreaking solution to the city's dual challenges of waste management and energy security - a $400 million Waste-to-Energy Plant to be located in Epe. This strategic facility represents a critical step in our mission to create a cleaner, more sustainable Lagos while addressing the pressing issue of diminishing landfill capacity.
The plant will serve multiple vital functions for our megacity. It will process municipal solid waste that currently overwhelms our landfills, with 80% of existing landfill capacity nearing exhaustion. Through advanced conversion technology, this waste will be transformed into clean energy capable of powering up to 2 million Lagosian homes and businesses. Beyond energy generation, the project will significantly reduce the waste-related flooding that plagues our drainage systems each rainy season.
What makes this initiative particularly compelling is its comprehensive value proposition. The facility is projected to deliver a 12% internal rate of return over 20 years through electricity generation and the introduction of tipping fees. More importantly, it directly supports our climate resilience goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from landfills while creating a new stream of renewable energy.
This announcement comes alongside our plans to implement an Early Warning System for extreme weather events. Together, these initiatives demonstrate the @jidesanwoolu led administration's commitment to innovative, sustainable solutions that address both our immediate environmental challenges and long-term climate adaptation needs. We invite both public and private sector partners to join us in making this vision a reality.
