#StJohns, round two! 🌱 We wrapped up the second of two mid-year trainings for Newfoundland and Labrador, continuing to support the incredible work happening in classrooms across the province.

We were honoured to be joined by Lisa Baker-Worthman, Assistant Deputy Minister of Education, and are grateful to the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development for their longstanding support of Roots of Empathy.

We are looking for a family with a 2-4 month-old infant (in October) to join us as a Volunteer Family at Vanier Elementary.

Your family could make a lasting difference in the lives of children in your community!

Roots of Empathy is centred around your baby becoming the ‘Tiny Teacher’ in a classroom. Volunteer Parents bring their babies into a classroom - and guided by a Roots of Empathy Instructor, the children are encouraged to read your baby’s emotional cues and take your baby’s perspective, which can lead to the development of prosocial skills such as empathy and inclusion.

Every child has a voice, but sometimes they can’t find it because of other powerful disincentives, like people making fun of them.

In a Roots of Empathy classroom, students do not laugh at other students because they know how they would feel. Roots of Empathy is a brake against cruelty. When children understand that their actions, like excluding another person, affect others’ wellbeing, they are more likely to operate with a lens of empathy.

Being a responsible citizen in adulthood starts in childhood.

Teachers, principals, and school staff play an essential role in shaping the future—not just through education but by nurturing empathy and emotional wellbeing in children.

Mary Gordon, Founder of Roots of Empathy and a proud Newfoundlander, began her career as a teacher and has spent her life advocating for empathy in education. She was honoured with the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador and received multiple honorary doctorates, including one from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Her belief that 'To teach is to touch the future' reflects the lasting impact of educators everywhere.

The Teacher Exodus.

Teachers are leaving the profession in droves. In Canada, the U.S., and the U.K., educators are facing unprecedented stress levels leading to burnout. Why? Managing dysregulated student behaviour, inadequate mental health support, education fund deficits, continuous criticism from our polarized societies and more. Let’s not forget the residual effects of the pandemic. We need to talk about how to support our teachers.

Happy Early Childhood Education Week! 🌟💚

Emotional literacy is crucial to learn at a young age. Just as math is important in school, understanding feelings and relating to others is vital for children. Social and emotional development influences children's ability to interact positively and meet their needs safely, which are essential skills for success in school and life.

Roots of Empathy provides a safe space for children to explore their emotions, understand them, and connect with others by bonding as a class with their 'Tiny Teacher' (a baby).
