— begin reading to them while they are babies
— read to them, and let them see you reading with real joy
— give them choice. let them pick their own books
— let them read what they love, without judgment or pressure

A 19th-century clergyman, Edward Drax Free, vicar of All Saints, Sutton in Bedfordshire, sold the lead off the church roof, amassed a large collection of pornography and fathered five illegitimate children. When attempts were made to remove him from the living, he barricaded himself in the vicarage and shot at anyone who approached. After a week’s siege, he surrendered and was expelled from the church. He died 13 years later, a beggar, when he was run over by a cart.
