It’s #MedievalMonday! Time to visit new excavations of the Mongolian-German project @dai_weltweit/#kaak_dai at the summer palace of a Mongol Khan in Orkhon Valley (c. 13th cent. AD). Masses of glazed tiles point to representational buildings. Getting there + back was interesting.
Deer stones are argued to represent individuals, perhaps 'warriors' or 'chiefs'. Excavations show them to be part of elaborate sets of features. More + literature in J. Wright's (2021) #OpenAccess overview of current research on Mongolian prehistory, 448f: https://t.co/6aiISX1jCW
Visiting our local #deerstone in Orkhon Valley of #Mongolia on #StandingStoneSunday. Found in (late) Bronze Age commemorative complexes, deer stones are often anthropomorphic, with earrings/ears, belts + weapons depicted besides the ‘flying deer’ covering their upper ‘bodies’.👇
A done-based aerial survey suggested that the layout of the ancient Uighur capital Khar Balgas followed nomadic principles rather than Iranian-Sogdian or Chinese models of city planning + was thus “an instance of a genuine steppe-nomadic kind of urbanity.” https://t.co/FJFkQK0lLY
#FieldworkFriday with @dai_weltweit/#kaak_dai in #Mongolia: The Mongolian-German project continues excavations at the vast ancient city Khar Balgas (8th/9th c. CE) in the rich cultural landscape of the Orkhon Valley with urban centres + residences of successive nomadic empires...
@davidwengrow Gosh, this was such a long time ago!😉I remember us using a (then) state-of-the-art 3,3 megapixel camera in archaeological documentation and taking ‘high resolution’ digital photographs of the landscapes we traversed on donkeyback and of the rock art + rock gongs we documented🥁
No better place to read up on ‘The indigenous origins of social housing and democracy in the Americas’ than Teotihuacan, which "was not just 'anti-dynastic' in spirit, it was itself a utopian experiment in urban life." (from 'The Dawn of Everything' by D. Graeber + @davidwengrow)
@Schepers_CJ@davidwengrow On 29 June we'll either attend @davidwengrow's second Albertus Magnus Professorship lecture ('On the Origins of "The Origins of Inequality" (Analysis of a Contemporary Myth)') at the University of Cologne OR the opening night of 'Indiana Jones + the Dial of Destiny'. Let's see 😏

"Teotihuacan can be imagined as a place full of music and sounds, but the sonic environment of the city has been lost forever" Archaeologist Adje Both researched, replicated + played the ancient musical instruments + (re)interpreted the city’s soundscape https://t.co/jse9qUZHzD👇

This multisensory trip to Naga, which presents a major heritage site by telling the story of the archaeological team, can be undertaken at the State Museum of Egyptian Art (SMAEK) in Munich until 22/10/2023. One drawback for non-German speakers: Texts + audio are in German only!
How can the archaeology / heritage of Africa be presented in museums without relying on objects? An exhibition on the ancient Kushite site of Naqa/Naga @smaek_muc gives some answers. Here, the process of archaeological + conservation work is foregrounded rather than ‘discoveries’

Focusing on experience instead of objects, the exhibition utilises 3D-models of buildings + sculpture, while explaining how the data were captured on site. The audio track includes team members talking about their work + also records the soundscape of Naga, such as buzzing flies.
