Dean Caven ’77 anchored Wittenberg’s legendary “Check Mate” defenses, helping the Tigers win 2 national championships and 3 conference titles. A 2x Golden Helmet Award winner and 1976 First-Team All-American, Caven was inducted into the Hall of Honor in 1994.

John Barren was a standout defensive back for the Tigers in the early 1980s, starting alongside his brother Mark. During the 1982 NFL strike, John Madden called them the “big bad Barren brothers” on CBS. His son, Danny ’20, later continued the family’s Wittenberg legacy.

Ron Cunningham ’96 was a cornerstone of Wittenberg’s offensive line, helping the Tigers to a 35-5-1 record and 2 NCAC titles. A 3x All-NCAC selection and 3x All-American, Cunningham was named to the NCAC All-Decade Team and Wittenberg Hall of Honor.

Juan Howard (Wooster HS) was a force at defensive tackle, helping lead Wittenberg to 3 NCAC championships and 4 straight NCAA playoff appearances. In 2001, he recorded 20 TFLs and earned the Hank Critchfield Award as NCAC Defensive Player of the Year.
