U9–U13 is the GOLDEN AGE for coaching principles. ⚽️
Not just technique anymore.
Not yet about complex tactics.
This is where players learn how to PLAY.
Here’s why 🧵
⚠️ Kids do not want to defend anymore.
That is why real defenders have a bigger chance than they think. If you love the art of defending, separate yourself now.

Different for sure.✏️
TOVO was built on a belief that sounds radical until you hear it twice:
The best training environment is not a simulation of the game. It is the game — compressed, intensified, and intelligently constrained.
The traditional model treats the game as the destination you travel toward through increasingly game-like drills.
For us the game is the vehicle. You start there. You live there. You make mistakes there, and you solve them there.
What this means practically is that every exercise — every single training moment — is designed to mirror competitive match conditions. The opposition is real. The decisions are live. The pressure has teeth.

PARENTS: Don't build your happiness around your kid’s athletic performance. If you get in a bad mood because they played bad, take a break from the game. Your kid needs to have tough performances to learn, not have great performances to make you feel good.

Most sideline problems come from one place.
Parents who forgot it's not their experience.
Great ones stay positive, trust the process, and say one thing:
"I love watching you play."
That's it.
The fact that Pep Guardiola could win a treble in one of his WORST seasons and Arteta could well win NOTHING in his BEST season ever is HILARIOUS! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
If you are a youth club banning paying clients from attending independent training outside your ecosystem, you have lost the plot.
Imagine banning a student from math camp or math tutorials.

I have coached thousands of US youth players.
One major issue I see is that they play vertically toward the goal even when the odds are ridiculously low of success.
If our Federation 🇺🇸 @ussoccer is insisting on “directional” training we are reinforcing one of the worst habits in youth players. Thus, we make the problem worse.
▪️Proposed Solution:
Recognize this issue and reinforce multi-directional solutions so that our players recognize that the game is indeed not a one way street. It will require us rethinking and redesigning our curriculum to nurture greater vision, better decisions and precision.
🗣️Creativity does not come from insistence, it comes from intelligence.

Manchester City build-up vs Leeds.
Bernardo Silva and Rodri inside the box, next to the GK. Rodri moves up and Bernardo finds him with his left foot.

Pattern plays can be useful, especially on days when we want less complexity in the training session.
They allow players to rehearse movements, timing, and coordination within a clear structure.
The coach - instructor, motivator, parent, sibling…
Pep Guardiola recognising the importance of shape-shifting to meet the needs of the people in front of him. Flexing his persona. Adapting his behaviours. Managing his attitude.
Authentic yes…but an authenticity in context. Appreciating the importance of the moment and the nature of individual differences.
For me, Pep knows that leadership is influence more than anything else. And influencing people is hard. It requires a keen sense of connection - a detective of emotion. A curiosity for experience and a keen eye for the embodiment of feeling.
What does this player need?
What are they experiencing?
What approach will soothe?
How can I raise the temperature?
Leadership isn’t about influence. It 𝐢𝐬 influence…
Messi joined the worst team in North America, took them to the MLS Cup Final. That’s influence, not half-naked instagram pictures, not dinner with Trump and Saudi Prince, not interview with Piers Morgan like Cristiano.
Earned, not given, not begged.
Dribbling is important but learning triangular passing combinations and movement off the ball is crucial for young players.
Look at the technical quality and body shape to receive. Exceptional.
Most coaches start with a drill.
The best ones start with a problem.
Here’s a simple 5-step framework (the 5 W’s) you can use to design drills that actually fit your team. 🧵
