@HockeyThinkTank Try convincing parents of this after some pariah “guarantees” their kid is getting scouted and will play junior, college, etc as long as they play for this team or in that tourney.
Best intentions and straight talk fall on deaf ears if it isn’t what they want to hear.
Here’s a minute of gold from Vechs and USHL commissioner Glenn Hefferan on what high level hockey people think about my hockey rankings.
*Reminder - MHR was created as a tool to find like competition. Not to satisfy adult ego.
I went to junior hockey a year too early. It was the hardest year of my life. Thank God I have a great family that supported me through the tough moments.
But here’s the thing…
My family always told me the truth and never let me make excuses. Even though we may have made the wrong decision rushing the process, the message from my parents was always to be the best teammate I could be, work through the tough stuff, and I’ll be better for it on the other side.
In today’s landscape where kids are trying to get to the next level as fast as possible instead of at the right time, there will be many kids in my shoes.
So for all the families out there that may be in that situation with their kid…
Don’t make excuses for them. Don’t tell them it’s not fair and they’re getting screwed. Help them to look in the mirror, control what they can control, and focus on getting better and earning what they get.
If my family made excuses for me or blamed other people, I would not have made it. I’m thankful for the tough moments and my parents helped me understand it was a part of the process.
If there were ever a stat to challenge the notion that you have to play on a super team or a team ranked high on My Hockey Rankings to make high level hockey, here it is.
Unreal insight from USHL commissioner @GlennHefferan:
Even after taking out kids from Minnesota (which is 25% of the USHL) and players coming in from other junior leagues, players currently playing in the USHL have come from 54 different Tier 1 organizations.
54!!!
We always preach that everyone has a different path. For all the parents out there…
Calm down, take a breath, keep your kid in your house under your parenting for as long as you can, and surround your kid with good people.
You DO NOT need to put your kid on a super team ranked high on MHR for them to “make it.” Here’s an incredible piece of data from top junior league @ushl to back it up.
I’m hearing horror stories about this stuff as early as 8u and 10u. This shows even at older ages the year before going to junior hockey that you can get there from multiple ways and places.
Hockey directors - a great piece of information to send to your parents.
