Great Coach! Better Man! Well Earned Coach Sawyer! Congratulations to a man who taught me what it meant to be Passionate about a profession and a place!
A PARENTโS JOURNEY THROUGH YOUTH SPORTS:
Age 5: โHeโs got a cannon.โ
Age 6: โHeโs the fastest kid out there. Coach said so.โ
Age 7: โRec ball isnโt challenging him anymore.โ
Age 8: โWe tried out for select. Obviously made it.โ
Age 9: โ$2,800 for the season. Plus uniforms. Plus tournaments. Plus hotels.โ
Age 10: โCooperstown is basically a family vacation, right?โ
Age 11: โHe needs a hitting guy. And a pitching guy. And probably a mental performance coach.โ
Age 12: โIโm not a crazy sports parent. The OTHER parents are crazy.โ
Age 13: โWe changed schools. For academics. (And also baseball.)โ
Age 14: โShowcases are a requirement at this age.โ
Age 15: โYa his ranking just ticked up. Weโre cooking.โ
Age 16: โHe just needs to get seen by the right school.โ
Age 17: โThe D1 schools want him to walk on. Heโll earn a spot by sophomore year.โ
Age 18: โOkay, D2 is actually really competitive.โ
Age 19: โHeโs redshirting. Strategic.โ
Age 20: โHeโs focusing on school now.โ
Age 21: โYou know what? Heโs so much happier.โ
Roughly 7% of high schoolers play in college.
About 1.5% of those get drafted.
Less than half of draftees ever play one day in the big leagues.
The odds of our kids going pro are somewhere between โstruck by lightningโ and โfind a $100 in old shorts.โ
I love youth sports (all my kids play a bunch of them) just keep a good perspective my friends. โ๏ธ
