Dan Quinn shares a masterclass on leadership, accountability, and why NFL players need the truth.
"Early on, I think I felt like leadership was just about me - how do I lead?"
"Then as I got a little more chrome and a little older, I recognized leadership wasn't just about me. It's helping others see the leadership in themselves and what they could become."
"Giving them a vision of what their career and path could look like."
Leadership isn't about you - it's about the people. It's about how you develop people.
"There would be good days and hard days always in between, but if we stayed consistent with these guys - let's face it, NFL players have been bullshitted a lot in their lives."
"They were great high school players to get recruited, a lot of BS going on there, getting into the NFL. They need to be told the truth about things."
"They appreciated that - the honesty when it's going good and when it's not."
You can't build trust and true connection if you aren't willing to say the hard truths.
Then he explained why he's comfortable doing it:
"They wanna be great, and we have to sometimes, as coaches and leaders, tell them the things they don't wanna hear."
"I'm comfortable doing that because they know I come from a place that I care about them and I love them and I want the best for them."
You have to master that balance of warm and demanding.
"It's why I coach...to have those connections with everybody involved with it. I've loved being on a team."
Truth without care is harsh.
Care without truth is hollow.
The best leaders give both because they know that is the right way and the only way to lead.

@SportPsychTips Nate Oats said, “If all I do is teach you how to throw a ball through a ring, I’m wasting my time.”
When you develop great people, you also build great teams.
• It means coach character.
• It means support others.
• It means being selfless.

This is the real issues in athletics today. Only elite athletes want the truth. They want the truth so they can grow to be the best version of themselves. It’s the good type of selfishness. #GrowthMindset
Kirby Smart shares the trait that the great players have that average players lack.
"Constructive criticism is good for you to develop."
"Most of our good players...they embrace it."
The best don't run from hard coaching - they seek it out.
If you want to grow, be coachable.
You can't reach your potential without feedback.
