Delta Force operators John “Shrek” McPhee and Jimmy Hall in the mountains of Tora Bora, Afghanistan, December 2001. The hunt for Osama bin Laden, two months after the towers came down on September 11.
The Tora Bora hunt is one of the most consequential what-ifs of the entire GWOT. Bin Laden was in those caves. The Unit, the Agency, and an Afghan partner force were on the ground. The capture or kill was within reach. The mission turned on decisions made far above the level of the men in this frame, and bin Laden slipped into Pakistan. Ten more years passed before Neptune Spear closed the file.
Shrek and Hall were there for the first attempt. The first chapter of a hunt that didn’t end the way it should have.
Bill Cowher shares the 3 things he told his 3 daughters - and his 53 players.
"Number one - choices and consequences."
"You can control your choice. But once you make a choice, it controls you...Just understand - with every decision you make, there's a consequence that goes with that."
Your choices and actions matter.
"Number two - it's about the people you surround yourself with."
"Are they people that are purpose-driven? Or are they people that are just trying to feed off of who you are?"
"I want people around me that are purpose-driven. People focused on doing something impactful and meaningful."
"And the third thing - nothing good happens after midnight. Nothing."
Three rules. A lifetime of wisdom.
Your choices control you. Your circle defines you. Your habits protect you.
