Struggling with a life-changing decision like quitting your job, relocating, or going back to school? Here's the best advice I received when I found myself in a similar position: SIMPLIFY COMPLEXITY.
Making difficult decisions is like cracking a password. The more variables you add, the longer it takes to find a solution.
Let's say you are thinking about quitting your job because of a toxic work environment.
For most people, this decision comes with multiple variables or conditions. You may think, "I will quit my job after I find another job in the same city that pays better, that I will enjoy more, that has better benefits, better work hours, improved career growth options, and also after the bonus payout."
Each condition or variable added is like an additional character in a password, exponentially increasing the complexity of finding a solution. Just one variable can turn a decision that should take 5 days into 4 months, or even stretch 4 months into a decade (See the image).
This is why we often find ourselves stuck not only at work but also in life.
If you want to move swiftly and decisively, you must simplify complexity and reduce the variables.
Taking the earlier example, instead of having several conditions for quitting your job, you could say, "I will quit my job after the bonus payout." While there is still some complexity by removing all the other conditions related to finding another job first, you significantly increase the likelihood and speed at which you take action.
In my case, the decision revolved around relocating, which naturally involves numerous considerations that affect both professional and personal life.
After feeling stuck for a while, a mentor told me I was trying to solve an equation with too many variables and I needed to simplify the complexity of my decisions. After this, I decided that family would be the only consideration I would try to solve.
Once I had this clarity, all other decisions became clear as well, allowing me to act swiftly.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, remember: SIMPLIFY COMPLEXITY.
