I’m going to say this again….
Student athlete and the parent and coaches of student athletes. Especially High School and Junior college.
Take care of your academics!!!!
To get on a college roster is more competitive than ever. Lack of academic maturity is the easiest thing to separate you from opportunities. Not talent or performance.
If you are the best athlete around and you don’t have the grades, you are losing opportunities by the second at all levels.
When you get to your desired school, the easiest way to get cut is to not have your grades in order.
Parents and coaches, check in on their academic progress just like you check in on their athletic performance.
Don’t wait until your senior year of hs or that last semester of Juco to figure it out. You have more work behind you than you do in front of you at that point of hs/juco.
I’m transitioning to a new school and I’m shutting down young people with poor academic performance.
In this day and age, there are two things you cannot be:
1. High maintenance
2. Unproductive
I did a little research
Some of these “recruiting sites” are charging anywhere from $300 to $3000) per year pending on the “service” they offer.
Do not waste your money.
1. Your performances and your grades will get attention
2. Be realistic about where your market value is or isn’t when it comes to your performances and grades.
3. Do your research. Look at what is making conference finals and scoring points. The bigger the profile the school has, look at the ncaa meet.
4. Do not assume anything. Just because a school doesn’t have a finalist doesn’t mean they are investing in that event or the people in that event.
5. T&F is a production game not just a potential game. Everyone has potential. Not everyone will do what it takes to produce.
6. It doesn’t matter how these sites present your videos and profiles, if your performances can’t help that school you’ve targeted, the probability is low they will invest in you. If your grades are bad, the probability drops lower.
7. Everything these sites say they do, you can do on your phone. You can send that same video you sent to the “service” to coaches along with your transcripts and your profile on https://t.co/puW0jiXxXP or https://t.co/8FZJmqoXgu
8. Email an AD or president is not going to get you an athletic scholarship if your performances/grades don’t help the program in the postseason (or at least within reason). Those entities are just going to send it to the HC for evaluation.
8. In most cases, no response is your answer about that school. You want attention, level up and make sure your grades are in order.
9. Some schools are still using standardized tests for academic aid. Coaches do not have any influence on money they don’t control.
10. I’ll say it again. T&F is NOT a back door to Football. I don’t know any T&F coach that is going to invest $$$ into an athlete that will not be at practice all fall, run indoors, disappear for spring ball, and come back the last few weeks of outdoor. You better be super elite for that conference for that to happen
11. Just like you don’t need to waste money on recruiting sites, DO NOT LISTEN TO THE STREET TEAM. Anyone promising your child or you a scholarship that is not within the coaching staff of that program, can not help you or represent any decisions made by the head coach. Go to the source.
12. Coaches are not trying to disrespect you. We are in the most honest sport. You may not like our delivery of the truth, but we will tell you the truth…in most cases. If your performances can help or at least within reason, you may have an opportunity.
The people that did get scholarships could have gotten them at those schools by doing the following:
Go to https://t.co/FvgAeD9D8T Look at the lists, look at the conference/national championship results, send updated transcripts, contact info, meet results, and meet videos to head coaches and assistant coaches. All that can be done on your phone or laptop for FAR less (also known as Free) than these sites are offering you.
Don’t try to butter us up, we read right past that yada yada. Get to the meat of it all. Ask good questions.
And for the Love of God
Don’t demand anything.
That’s all I have for you today. I just don’t want to see you get scammed.
Let's say you buy a car and you're shopping around for car insurance. You want great coverage, honesty, ensuring you'll be taken care of along the way when needed.
Company 1: Hello, let's chat...we'll give you specific info on all our coverages and how we can help you through your process...we deliver based on our history
Company 2: Hey, here's my friends Lamborghini, we don't even cover this, have nothing to do with it, but isn't it cool?
Now apply this to recruiting. Is the coach breaking down your spot on the team, how they can help you, train you, support you, interact on the daily?!
Or are they just giving you a lanyard on the sideline of a football game you'll never be on ever again 😂
I can’t stress this enough
Dear HS and JC athletes
You have to lock in academically!!!!
Nothing is more discouraging seeing an athlete that can is exceptional on the track and awful in the classroom.
You are costing yourself opportunities and adding stress to your support system.
Please lock in
@coachmorton83 I say general prep because it's where they learn the foundational things like form and technique stuff but also get to train the little things.
2 things you can’t be as a young adult
1. High Maintenance
2. Low Productivity
Coaches aren’t calculating possibilities and potential. They are calculating probability of production.
Some people may not like reading that or hearing it. But it’s the truth.
Do your job in the classroom, at practice and competition, and make good social decisions consistently. When you make a mistake, own it and correct it. Keep it simple.
Coaches, parents, athletes in high school track and field.
The vast majority of T&F recruiting sites DO NOT speak for the recruiting standards of any program.
It is extremely rare that a recruiting site helps you get recruited in our sport.
What helps you are a combination of good grades and test scores and consistent performances that can help a team in the postseason by making finals and/or competing to win individual championships.
With roster limitations coming very soon to a program near you, it’s going to be way more competitive to be on a roster.
So 40 times and football stats are NOT going to help you.
Save your time and hard earned money.
College athletics you give up the me for the we. Doesn’t matter the sport. Everything you do impacts the team more than you know. Everything from your grades to your attitude. If you can’t grasp that than you will not make it
Dear T&F student athlete
Please take 5-10 min daily and watch film.
Compare and contrast what you are being taught and what you are doing vs the best in college and beyond.
Know what you are looking at.
If you are 5-9, looking at someone 6-4 may not be your model but there are some things you can learn.
If you are only working on getting better at practice, you are only halfway there.
Mental reps matter too.
In your life, you will face criticism from individuals who are too afraid and cowardice to actually take a chance. Always believe in what your purpose is and follow the direction that God leads you though it may be the path less taken.
Athletes don’t wait till senior year to get the grades up‼️
It’s too late at that point and no one is gonna wait for you to do that.
Grades > athletics 💯
Get the priorities right the first time!
@Coachjonhughes Question I've been thinking about is preparation for major competition. For me that's not necessarily the workouts but how to maintain a peak from conference to nationals or the mental aspects of prep
Athletes the best way to get financial aid for college? Get good grades and test scores‼️ it’s that simple! With how many people want athletic aid and how little there is, make it easier on yourself and get the grades!
