June. Eating tacos with a younger coach I was mentoring.

He pulls out his phone and starts scrolling through a workout list he'd been building.

"I've been thinking about this summer. What if we do two tempo days in the first block? Then add intervals in week six or seven?"

I took a bite.

"What made you start there?"

"What do you mean?"

"What's the question you asked BEFORE you decided what workouts to put in?"

He set his phone down. Didn't have an answer.

Because the first question isn't what workouts do we run.

It's what are we building toward.

Then how much time do we have.

Then what needs to be true by week eight for week twelve to work.

The workout is the answer to about the seventh question.

Coaches who start with workouts aren't wrong.

They're just starting at the end of the conversation.

The ones who get to October and can't figure out why the pieces stopped connecting?

They started here too.
