One bright spot for the #EWU football team so far this season has been the play of Jaxon Bell, who just happens to be the younger brother of starting quarterback Nate Bell:

“We won the game, but we didn’t really defeat the team”

If you allow yourself to be happy over results, you’ll die by the same sword.

Chase the standard, not the outcome.

The score may indicate what you did, but the process reveals who you are becoming.

Sean McVay asks himself regularly…

“Would I want to be coached by me?”

The LA Rams coach holds the mirror up in front of himself and questions his practices and processes. He questions his behaviours and actions.

“Would I want to be coached by me?”

Would I want to experience what I deliver daily? Would I want to be around me? Would I want to engage in my session design? Would I want to approach me and have an honest conversation? Would I look to me as someone who is highly competent?

“Would I want to be coached by me?”

A question that goes beyond sport…would I want to be led by me? Would I want to be in a team at work with me? It’s a question that immerses you in a meta-state aimed to build self-awareness - thinking about your behaviours in a given context. Rising above yourself to look at yourself. Taking the helicopter view of what others might experience from you.

Lamar Jackson says the best players should want to be challenged and coached because respect is respect

“I want to be held accountable. I want you to bring the best out of me. I’ve been coached like that all my life.”

“Since youth football. I had certain coaches that would get on me.”

“Just holding me accountable because they knew what type of player I was. College, I had Bobby Petrino.” There’s no discrimination.”

“You’re getting coached. You’re getting coached how you’re supposed to get coached.”

“Challenged at all times. That’s what I’m receiving from Coach Declan. He’s challenging us, and that’s pretty much what I want.”

“I feel like every player should want that. You want the coach to bring the best out of you. I don’t feel like I know it all.”

“Even if I feel like I already know something.. No, teach me. I want to see your point of view.”

“Our age doesn’t mean anything because respect is respect. His title is coach. So I’m going to treat him like a coach.”

“I don’t care if he’s 50, 29, 28. I don’t care if he was younger than me. His title is coach, so I’m going to treat him like a coach. And I want him to coach me like he’s my coach.”
