Something is brewing in Gainesville.
When Rick Brunson noticed the love for the game of basketball that his son Jalen had early on, they set out on a journey that has led them to an unimaginable place
Rick talks with SNY's Ian Begley about setting the foundation for Jalen's NBA stardom:
“This was a job for him, this is what he wanted. I didn’t know where it would go from there, but I knew he was serious about it.
Most kids play, go home and enjoy the rest of the day. He cared about winning and losing. Losing bothered him. He wanted to be perfect, he wanted to play well, he wanted to win.
I wanted to see if he would fold or if he would keep coming back. Are you going to give in? Are you going to talk back? Or are you just going to work and keep showing that you can do it?
I would always tell him, 'This is what a college coach is going to do — the difference is I love you, he doesn’t.'
He kept coming back. He wanted to prove me wrong."
As Jalen Brunson leads the Knicks closer to the NBA Finals, the winning mentality instilled with his father Rick is still front and center
It’s not always the most talented team that wins.
It’s the best team that wins.
"We don't care who gets the shine, the shots, the minutes.
We are focused on winning.
Everyone is willing to sacrifice their own personal agenda or performance for the betterment of the team."
