Today is the anniversary of Oíche na Gaoithe Móire - the Night of the Big Wind, 1839, the worst natural disaster in Irish history.
Did the terror and the psychological damage of the night feed into the language-shift in Ireland?
Grateful for retweets!👍

The Noonday Gun: fired over Grand Harbour in Malta every day at precisely 12:00 - originally so that navigators at anchor below could calibrate their ship’s chronometers. Watch til end.
@RobLooseCannon Had them in Cork too. The South Mall was a father and son operation. The father made a wedding present of his side of the street to the son. True story.
It's great to see our #LittleLibrary getting such mighty use! Added a whole bunch in today, lots for smaller book worms.
In the run up to Xmas, if you're making room on a shelf for that naughty elf, please drop a couple of titles into the library.
Or pop us a message #Cobh
📌 Our two historic, coastal towns in Cork East — Youghal and Cobh — are being held back from realising their full potential due to the absence of key infrastructural links.
🏛️ This week in the Dáil I challenged the Taoiseach on the government's lack of ambition for the region.
Great delight at the success of @CobhTidy Towns, an 11th gold medal in today's awards.
Many congratulations!
The adjucators report makes it clear that @PortofCork and @Corkcoco as owners of Clock Tower have abdicated their responsibilities .... 1/
We are delighted to announce that "The Cobh Chronicle" 2025 will be available in early November.
Amazing value at €10 and all proceeds going to Cobh's local charities and organisations.
Thanks to everyone who has supported the magazine over the last number of years. 👍
@paddyjogorman@LondonStone@Chic_AvantGarde Four of them still just about visible, one on each corner. The other two have been covered over by successive layers of tarmac.
@paddyjogorman@LondonStone@Chic_AvantGarde You could be right! Built in 1883 to a design by James F. McMullen. Constructed by J. Dennehy, East-Hill. Local tradition attributes its construction to Charlotte Grace O' Brien for use by emmigrants but mostly used by cabmen. Six steel wheels allowed the structure to be moved.
"The Cobh Chronicle" will be published in November 2025.
There is still time to submit an article or photograph for inclusion.
Email the Cobh Chronicle with your story to [email protected]
The closing date for final submissions is 15th July 2025.
The towns in Cork Harbour are so close together if you go by water and so far apart if you go by road.
Makes no sense that there’s no waterbus service in the Lower harbour. #ReduceCarUse#CorkHarbour
