Amazon is facing an $8B/year problem.
• ~75% of employees leave the company
• Only 1/3 of new hires stay for >90 days
• 100% employee turnover in warehouses (double the industry average)
But it gets even worse.
Let me explain:
My checking account was overdrawn, again.
I looked at the ATM machine, staring at the screen that showed a negative, which was certainly not very positive.
Ever had that feeling when you walk up to checkout, you hand over your card, they swipe it, and you hear that beep? You know the one. The beep that says, “Sir, you are broke and this thing isn’t worth the plastic it’s printed on.”
I still sometimes side eye the little credit card approval machine making sure each transaction goes through. Because when for so many years they don’t, you keep a little PTSD with you that one day again, they won’t.
My first job out of college paid me $36,000 give or take. Money was scarce. I lived with roommates (ahem, my parents), and worked in a padded cubicle on a call center line at The Vanguard Group.
Good ole Vanguard. I’m pretty sure my first corporate job was where dreams go to die. It was such a party that two of my 20-something coworkers started taking anti-depressants to deal with the anxiety.
Anxiety from what, you ask? Being a cog in the machine, I think. We logged into a computer the second we started, and we logged out for every bathroom, lunch, or “off the phone” break.
If there was a matrix in the real world, we were plugged into it. Headphones straight into computers that tracked every word you said. Bosses named Ron with coffee breath that peered over your shoulder. Cafeterias full of fluorescent lights and plastic trays. It was the American dream turned monotonously nightmarish.
Then the real fun started.
I was a 21-year-old taking calls during the financial crisis about, “Why did you and Vanguard steal all my money!” These calls were heartbreaking and largely from retail investors who didn’t realize that the stock market could take a nosedive and bring your retirement with it.
But the routine continued. Wake up every day before the sun, pull on my scratchy cheap suit, slide into my cubicle's rolling chair, and pretend to smile at the “How was your weekend?” banalities.
I can still feel how time slows there. I’d actively stare at the clock on my screen wondering how the minutes painfully dragged between the hours of 3 to 5pm. I started to understand those taking anxiety medicine. My skin would crawl as if it could also feel my life slowly draining away. I started to hear myself say things like “TGIF” and “It’s 5 o’clock somewhere right.” Just shoot me.
I think hell might look like an underpaid corporate job. If so, I’ve been there… and I’m never going to go back.

My husband said, “When you say you want to do something, just go do it.”
A simple statement... so rarely done. Willpower, a superpower.
I pause thinking how the day got away, how it slid like a slippery eel through my fingers. It wriggled away into the arms of lost time. Our actions accumulate. It’s not the end goal achieved, that happens in seconds, it’s the steps you take minute by minute to get there.
We humans were not wired for singular focus. We were wired to survive, not thrive. So maybe it’s a mix of grace and persistence, of allowance and process.
We have to carve out of our very skin the distractions. Rip out that which doesn’t serve us. Violently vomit out what weighs us down.
Every single action matters. They all accumulate.
Don’t let another be the determinant of your day. Grab the eel.
