This article on secret coca plants misses a crazier origin story: @CocaColaCo, interested in #cocaine content & leaf flavors, was permitted to grow coca in the United States in 1964. Over 20 years the project grew into these how-to-destroy-coca US govt experiments...🧵

Anslinger, Commissioner of Narcotics and infamous anti-marijuana zealot, who helped @CocaColaCo in ending a prohibition on “Merchandise No. 5”.
