We’re still banning children’s books, are we?
Here’s a 🧵 about how I published one about marijuana: a picture book for kids, a parent’s tool for starting the conversation, a lightning rod for controversy.
In researching my @CoffeeCocaCola book, I learned the wild history of @CocaColaCo’s hand in the UN negotiations on the prohibition of coca.
Read my illustrated book for more info, or see an essay I posted about it here:

imagine pouring your heart, soul, and pain into a novel so a woman named michelle can give it one star on goodreads because she "hates colons and the book has colons in it."
My point is that in an effort to thwart a legal roadmap to safer marijuana use that would alleviate suffering and diminish an expensive, overreaching criminal justice system, you’re consistently making silly, spurious comparisons and imagine them profound.
THE EVOLUTION OF CULTURAL & LEGAL STIGMAS VS. PLANTS IS WHY TOBACCO WAS ONCE ADVERTISED BY DOCTORS WHILE WEED WAS THE DEVIL’S LEAF AND NOW CANNABIS IS MEDICINE AND WE’RE TRYING TO BAN TOBACCO BUT IT’S ALL PROHIBITION BASED ON FEAR AND NOT SCIENCE AND WILL REPEAT UNTIL #latememe
In 2005, no one would touch this. I self-published and became the #1 best-selling children’s book talking about marijuana in a responsible, scientifically-based, fun way.
4 editions later… it’s my book 🎂 today & I’d like to thank my new publisher @AkashicBooks for the journey.
Going to take the occasion of 4/20 to suggest picking up a copy of my new book. If you're grateful for the strides we've made with legalizing cannabis, you should be paying attention to mistakes we're beginning to repeat with tobacco and nicotine. https://t.co/qAFlmMsq5Q
Lost in the budget shuffle is an effort by @GovKathyHochul to increase penalties for cannabis possession. The intent is to shut down illegal shops, but the proposed bill would allow for a fine of up to $150K for ANYONE possessing ANY AMOUNT of untaxed cannabis.
This article on secret coca plants misses a crazier origin story: @CocaColaCo, interested in #cocaine content & leaf flavors, was permitted to grow coca in the United States in 1964. Over 20 years the project grew into these how-to-destroy-coca US govt experiments...🧵
@palafo Edibles are definitely problematic because they have been decarboxylated. Raw weed hasn’t been. Ask the same vets if they understand the difference between THC and THCA. If they don’t, talk to an actual marijuana researcher.
From the guy who says he performed an abortion that magnified his hope in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ (@nytimes), comes an op-ed arguing a puff of weed should be handled under the supervision of a physician.
I mean, fine, but… what’s up with curation of giving out op-Eds?
"Some judicious restrictions are better for everyone: Gambling should take place in casinos, not on smartphones, and marijuana should be used only under a health-care provider’s supervision," @matthew_loftus writes:
