I said this was going to happen. Chinese open source is looking quite attractive as toke spend keeps increasing. The vast majority of use cases don’t require the absolute frontier of intelligence.

This will become a big problem. If US enterprise is built on Chinese models, we will become reliant on Chinese chips as the chip<>model codesign becomes more codependent.

For open source AI to win, we need to build out these areas:

> Decentralized inference/ML
> Open source dataset repos & data alignment
> RL/SFT/Post-training
> World model research
> Physical AI & robotics
> Agent loops & harnesses
> And a bunch of other fields

We need tons of experts across the board.

We can't just rely on open-weight models that could get closed off at any moment.

What we really need is a rallying point.
Top-tier researchers like @karpathy should have been leading projects like this instead of joining Anthropic.

Open source must win.

Story time. I'm a big Black leftist coming out of my AI bubble for a moment. I'm also a gun owner and wanted options for Black gun clubs that don't involve the NRA. So I looked into and registed with the SRA (Socialist Rifle Association), because they had some Black clubs.

That required becoming a paying member and a interview. Which was odd because my NRA member friends said they never had to do that. So whatever, I play along because I just wanted to go shooting with some Black folk who knew what they were doing.

Interview is scheduled and the day off no call. No email saying they were busy and could they reschedule. My office manager role kicked in and said this is not very well organized. A few weeks goes by, I'm running errands, and I get a call. It's the SRA guys and they apologized for the confusion, and did send a follow up email. I must have missed it because I forgot about them.

Since they are on the line I go through the interview. It was an experience. It's been a few years now so I can't recall everything that was asked. So I will say, that for the entire time, I was asking myself, "What in the cointelpro do these guys have going on to ask me these sort of questions? Are they on some Weather Underground crap?" Needless to say, the interview did not go well.

I don't trust DSA because I get the same vibes.
