Populous is a fascinating company.
• 3,000+ stadium projects
• Collectively worth $60B+
• 1,000+ employees across 4 continents
They built the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (with a retractable pitch) and roughly 50% of all MLB ballparks.
Here's a breakdown 👇
The Populous story starts with Ron Labinski.
Labinski was an architect who worked on Kansas City's Truman Sports Complex, which housed two sport-specific stadiums — Arrowhead Stadium and Royals Stadium – next to each other.
This project was unique because Arrowhead was the first modern stadium built *only* for football, and most outdoor sports stadiums up to that point were multipurpose venues used by multiple sports franchises, like MLB and NFL teams.
Labinski is therefore credited with ending the era of multipurpose stadiums in sports.
He also designed the first-ever club-level seating space in sports — this is a huge revenue driver for teams today — for the Miami Dolphins’ Joe Robbie Stadium.
And Labinski's firm's design of Camden Yards in Baltimore, which opened in 1992, is credited as the blueprint for urban stadiums with mixed-use real estate around the ballpark/stadium.
Populous isn't the only company that designs and builds sports stadiums. But they have become the most successful firm because other (larger firms) only dedicate a portion of their business to sports, while Populous exclusively focuses on sports facilities.
And the Populous portfolio is MASSIVE today.
