I’m honored to receive the endorsement of Saint Paul Firefighters Local 21. As mayor, I’ll keep fighting for the resources & support they need. With EMS, delivered through our fire department & threats to health coverage, our reliance on them grows—and so does my commitment.
🙏 The Honoring Our Fallen Heroes Act was inspired by the tragic loss of Captain Mike Paidar, a proud @L21_stpaulfire member, to occupational cancer.
Now, Mike's family is sharing their story as they call on Congress to honor our fallen heroes.

🏆🔥 Congratulations to District 5 #IAFF57 Local Leadership Award Winner Michael T. Smith, president of @IAFFLocal21. Thanks for paving the way for affiliates nationwide and standing with the families of our fallen.
Today, I joined the @IAFFofficial Convention in Boston to make the case:
When @KamalaHarris and I make it to the White House, we’ll work hand-in-hand with our partners in labor to keep America’s unions strong.
Unforgettable and a once in a lifetime experience today with @StPaulFireDept@L21_stpaulfire Thank you for all you do and for sharing it with us today! Read a great recap from @Ward4STP below:
St. Paul fire captain Mike Paidar was a hero and his life was cut short because of cancer caused by the toxins he was exposed to responding to fires.
His story is one of many and why I’ve introduced legislation to help first responder families who’ve lost loved ones like Mike:
Great to be with the International Association of Fire Fighters today. Fire fighters put their lives on the line everyday - we saw it in Burnsville and we are seeing it across the country as they battle wildfires and more. We must do everything we can to support them.
Saint Paul Firefighters IAFF Local 21 members had the privilege of building bicycles for Toys for Tots this morning with staff at Mauer GMC and soldiers of the MN Marine Reserves
Happy Holidays!
Expressing solidarity to @L21_stpaulfire today - they are forced to go before a arbitrator to fight for fair pay and safe staffing because city hall won’t show them the respect they earned - the Mayor might not support them, but the people of St Paul are with our firefighters
A bit of a tense exchange unfolding now between St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter, who is about to deliver his 2024 budget address, and the firefighters… labor dispute over contracts:
@richneumeister@L21_stpaulfire@MayorCarter Thank you for the support! @L21_stpaulfire and the city have gone through mediation. The outside law firm the city contracted for these negotiations brought offers that were worse for the firefighters than anything previously discussed during negotiations. Arbitration is 8/30.
Proud to support @L21_stpaulfire Saint Paul Firefighters IAFF Local 21 as they fight for a fair contract.
As a paramedic on my local fire department, I support my First Responder colleagues and call on @MayorCarter to do the same.
We stood in #solidarity with @L21_stpaulfire at their info picket this morning! They have been working without a contract for 214 days and are calling on @MayorCarter to negotiate a fair contract in good faith.
