Police in Virginia arrested 27-year-old Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano Wednesday night after finding him smashing the historic Iwo Jima statue near Marine Corps Base Quantico with a sledgehammer.

He knocked the head off one Marine, damaged other parts of the monument, and caused an estimated hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.

He’s now facing multiple charges, including two felonies, and is being held without bond.

This memorial honors American heroes who fought and died for our country. Anyone who desecrates it deserves the harshest punishment possible
